I've owned both. The 9R is roomier, has better pillion accomodation,
puts less weght on the wrists under 70mph, and gives less wind blast
    at speed.

    No way.

I suppose you _could_ claim it's better at being a lardy old
sports-tourer, but even then it's only the lardy and old bits that it
    would be better at.

Roomier? not sure what that's about.
Pillion - the gixxer has an *excellent* seat. Broad and long enough with
    pegs in a decent position.
Wrists - yeah it does need adjustable bars (and rearsets).
Reliability? IIRC the 9R is great but the Suzuk is looking bloody good 2
    years down the road too.
So for the cost of a few hundreds of squids on accessories you get a lighter
faster newer design which is just plain better. I like the 9R to look at and
to ride but it's had it's day. Anyone who chooses it in preference is trying
to make or prove some sort of point to themselves.

A few hundred? Would have thought a bit more then that.

And you didn't really comment on the fact that some people are
never going to explore the full abilities of the ZX9R, so why
should they pay more for a bike, which they even less likely
    use to its full potential?

I like my 9R. A lot. The main reason I've kept it so long
is that every time I've thought about a change, I couldn't
see anything else that fills a similar role, but is just a
    bit newer, IYSWIM.[1]

Now I'm happy to be proven wrong[2], but I've always though
that I, personally, would find a Gixer or 'Blade a fair bit
less comfortable[3] and more 'twitchy' in the handling stakes.

[1] Although a Triumph, possibly a Sprint RS, has always
appealed and something I'd like to have a go on.
    [2] CIHAGM?
[3] Coming from a ZXR750, the 9R felt like an armchair in
    comparison.

    Around 3 grand if you're talking a new ZX9R at 6k and a K3 GSXR1000 at
    8 and a bit.

The pillion pegs are *very* high. I'm sure the 9R, while still not
great, gives better pillion accomodation. And it's got grab handles
And you missed my comment on wind blast. I find the gixxer pretty
frsutrating on big euro trips cos even with a double bubble screen,
it's just too much like hard work to crusie at anything over 110mph.
The 9R was just way better in this regard.

Hmmm, wonder if that's a significant difference on the K3 model, cos I
can't really say I found that, compared to the Sprint ST.

I haven't been pillion on a 9R but I found the Gixxer rather comfy though
there is no rail. High just isn't in it. The 996 defines high.
Well we've spoken about that but it's not an intractable problem to make a
higher screen. I've seen just that on some of the RR bikes.
Have I mentioned my winter GSXR project?

Having ridden both I still find myself more comfortable on the 9R. I`m
rather tall and find the GSX a bit too cramped for me. I tried a 2003
blade the other day and found that incredibly uncomfortable. On the
road there isnt a lot to choose between them on performance anyway. It
might be lighter but you none of us are pro racers. I spoke to a chap
at Newlands Corner the other day who was praising how light the blade
was - he must have weighed about 18stone himself so sort of ruined his
    arguement!

When they chopped the 600 ZX6s in Jan 2002 to make way for the 636s Official
price cuts meant retail went as low as £4,700 and at the same dealers you
    could get a last year's (2001model) ZX9 for about £6,300 (possibly because
they were all a rather unpleasant sort of brick red).

I wouldn't be surprised if they went below £6,ooo if the range is dropped.
I think it'd be a pity to drop them mind, but I dunno what Kwak's production
resources are like or the cost/opportunity pressure keeping the line going
    causes them.

  13. I've been pillion on both in the past few months [1] I would have to
say neither are pillion friendly but the 9R wins hands down over
    comfort.

I would hate to go any distance on the Gixer. I'm not the tallest of
people but I felt very exposed on it and felt I had to crouch to get
out of the blast and we were going very fast.

[1] both out of necessity rather than choice.

I just got quoted £6495 on the road with RAC. for a 2002 model but still
new. I prefer the colour scheme and am told thats all that was diferent from
2003 model. Does this sound a good deal?

    Cheers,

  15. Yes, that's good. I reckon they'll be down to 6k before the end of the
year, but that probably won't be otr, and PDI etc usually adds at least
    a couple of hundred quid.

not strictly true. They went back to 4 pot brakes on the 2003 model,
which supposedly work better. The 6 pot brakes are still very
    respectable though.

Thx for the reply. I might go 4 it. :)
Interestingly there is no mention of ZX9r on the Kawak main website 2004
range, which is the best indication there wont be one next year.

    Time for another then, Graham.

In order to ease reading of this particularly high-volume newsgroup,
there is a convention to post at the bottom - below the text to which
you are replying - like I am here, see? Snipping signatures and
irrelevant text is also good form, minimising the amount of extraneous
    crap to wade through.
