ZX7R billet brake hanger...

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Larry xlax Lovisone, Nov 4, 2004.

  1. As promised here's a pic of a billet aluminum brake hanger I've been
machining all week for Marv's ZX7R replacing the stock purple hanger...
    http://www.fox302.com/userdata/netters2/files/ShopPics/ZX7RRearBrakeHanger.JPG

The shiny hanger on the left weights 7oz where the purple one on the right
    weights 11oz... that's a weight savings of 4oz...

I'm happy and Marv is happy because now his rear brake hanger matches the
    front Ohlins brake hangers...

You'll see it all in an up coming issue of Cycle World for they are in the
    process of shooting pics...

  5. Thanks Steve... Oh no... I dream about owning a CNC... I employ a Taiwan
copy of a 9 x 12 Bridgeport and a manual rotary table... it's all done by
hand and eye coordination... ruffed out by band saw and finished up with a
    belt sander...
I'm not a trained machinist... it's all trial and error and hit and miss...
I just love working with metal...

That hanger is some excellent craftsmanship for a manual process IMHO. I
don't think I have the patience, or the eyes for that type of work any
longer. I'm spoiled by CNCs & Cad/Cam :) So ya get an "adda boy" from a
"real" machinist. Although, I rarely run machines any longer, I just draw
real pretty 3D pictures these days, and mainly just cut carbon/graphite
    for the EDM sinker.

One of these days I'll post some pics of the cabon fibre molds I'm making,
and the billet breather system I've made for my Buell.
Yeah, ya love it till ya *GOTTA* do it on a daily basis :)

I create solid models of cored turbine nozzles on PRO/E. The casting
vendor uses ceramic cores and the nozzle itself is made out of Inco718
or HastX or some other exotic alloy. Then we EDM cooling holes in it.
Our housings are milled on giant multi-axis machines where just the
tool rack alone is 6' high and 10' long and the machine sits in a
custom concrete pit foundation. It's a kick wandering through the shop
watching chips spewing and thinking about the parts I _could_ make.

It's my job, but it's really like playing a computer game all day. i
get to model complex geometry on the tube, then go see the real parts
made in the shop. _My_ handiwork, OTOH, is relegated to hacksaws,
hammers, and hand drills. Nice work, Larry.

    Way cool turby...
    I use VX (www.vx.com), and Delcam PowerShape/PowerMill. I design/machine
assemble plastic, and die cast injection molds. Do you also use Pro/Man?

My brother works in one of the largest mold builders in North America.
They've got a butt load of those huge 5 axis machines. I just walk thru
there, thinking of the things I could make :)

No, but the guys in the shop do. Things are so different now from the
old days. The drawing is just a legal definition document that follows
more than precedes the manufacturing of the part now. For example, I
send the solid model of a nozzle to our casting vendor and he starts
making his mold from that before the drawing is ever started. For
milled parts, the manufacturing engineer takes my model and uses
Pro/Man to program his machines. Concurrent engineering has made the
whole design/manufacturing/production cycle so much faster and more
    efficient it's ridiculous.

I'm blown away by injection molding. The parts I design are complex
enough, but the molds are a quantum level more so.
