Thank **** you don't work for me or you'd be taking the long walk to
    unemployment.

Sometimes it is necessary to fabricate a special tool for a special job.
Naturally care is needed to retain a correctly square face.
    My tools, my rules.
And I dont need any steenkin employment TYVM, especially from people who
    discourage initiative.

    On this I agree.
    On this I agree.
On this one you're so far off the mark even the space shuttle would
    ignore you as being debris.

People pay me to be innovative when it comes to engineering solutions
but grinding an impact socket would see me thrown off site in seconds.

Bit of a fool for not checking the pressures ASAP though don't you think?

I'm not convinced the bike wasn't being "exuberantly" used either.

I'd hazard a guess at heat treatments and hardness being compromised by
the grinding, rendering the socket unsafe for use in a power tool

Are sockets case-hardened, or otherwise given a surface treatment?

That'd be about it. In theory (ha ha) cracks would start in the
corners because you'd introduced stress points and altered the
physical structure of the socket. I'm not saying it'd be a certainty
to happen but in a work situation the chances would be way too high to
    risk.

We always use a torque multiplier rather than using a larger impact
tool because you can control the forces being applied to the socket
rather than just hitting it with a virtual sledge hammer iyswim but
there's a massive difference between being paid to get things apart in
a safe and controlled manner and just breaking it.

The person who suggested brute force to remove a sprocket nut isn't
    being paid to do it.

Which is why I was asking, instead of assuming. I am genuinely curious
to know what is done to a socket to make it useable.

Only the cheap ripoff varieties. There is no sustitute for proper high
strenth steels. Sounds like the safe tea nazis on the site where
Bonwick works cannot tell the difference.

True, but a spanner monkey knows when to watch another spanner
    monkey ;)
    lol. ok. Consider me forewarned.

I quite like the courier bike places, like Chasbikes, proper spit and
    sawdust.

What kind of hardening do they use on the steel of that enormous
    shovel you're using?

    What screaming?

If there weren't people on site who gave a **** about what we do the
UK would be a patchwork of 30 mile exclusion zones but most of the
people monitoring what we're playing with also acknowledge that we've
got a job to do and let us get on with it.

I might start putting nospam.netpwr in my sig and wearing sandals to
work and see where it gets me.

  17. Hmmm... he/she didn't use the bike for ages then blamed Watling? Fick
****, is what he/she[1] is; he/she had ample opportunity to check the
    pressures.

Not the same as dumping it immediately after the tyre's fitted, when you
assume the tyre monkey knows something about what he's doing.

I've had experience of using "professionals", so it's become 2nd nature.
Tyre pressures, oil levels and more recently, brake master cylinder
reservoirs after my pal had his SV 650 serviced and fitted with stainless
brake lines. I thought the numpties had overfilled his reservoir coz I
couldn't see the level through the side so I took the top off to find the
REAL reason I couldn't se the level.
Unfortunately, cunts like that DO exist.

    I don't use "Smiley's" for similar reasons.
