Planning a ride down that way on Sunday - there was an article in DiRE a
few weeks ago which suggested this was a good area for riding. Any of
you folks got any experience of this area/ good places to stop for a
    cuppa round Shaftesbury?

  2. It's closed for roadworks very soon. Maybe even now.

Never ride anywhere that a mag advertises as a good place to ride. It will
    be too crowded.

Hmm that thought had crossed my mind. Not too set on the route, just
    want to explore the region.

Ride up it and enjoy but be careful of cages cutting corners on the way
    down.

Best place round there for a cuppa (and the obligatory bacon sandwich)
is Old Sarum airfield. From memory it is up the top then bear off to
    the right.

The hill itself is fun - easier going up than down though.
I went down a few weeks ago with little one on the back who constantly
twisted and turned trying to see back up, despite much shouting from the
    front.

Don't put it in the centrestand facing up Gold Hill.

    Seconded.
Haven't been there for a while but always seems popular with gentlemen
of the powered bicycle persuasion, specially older ones.
You also get to see lots of bouncy landings and takeoffs and some of the
smallest real aircraft I've ever seen.

Did you have to enlist help to get it off again?

I'll add that to my possible agenda.

Never actually done that :) but did park a GPX750 facing downhill with
the front wheel on the kerb near Boscombe pier to stop it rolling off
    the sidestand.

    Certainly stopped it rolling off.

Took about ten minutes grunting (old Yorkshire biking meditation
technique) to back it far enough from the kerb[1] to move off.[2]

    [1] I just typed berk twice there.[3]
[2] Course I didn't ask anyone for help.
The only other people around were some nasty biker types.
[3] I think Freud wants his slip back now.

That takes me back to when I was a southern poofter. The hill itself
is fun but not very long. Cranborne Chase generally is pretty, though,
    so worth a visit.

    Was closed :(
Ah right - not actually at Old Sarum to the north-ish of Salisbury
    then....

    It was.

Still, managed a good 170 mile blast this morning, which was nice.
