Z650 exhaust

  1. Rather more perforated than first feared and (as feared) the balance
section is nowt but rusty metal.

Neighbour (skilled welder( is patching it. We're planning to just remove
the balance pipe altogether and patch over the hole on each side
    collector.

I'm assuming that the balance pipe just reduces noise by a minor decibel
or two and boosts horsepower by the same infinitesimal amount.

If all else fails I'll stick a four-into-one on it for Chimay. There's
one on Ebay but the robbing cnut wants £25 for postage (parcel post is
    under a tenner).

Where is it? Is there scope to use the underground railway?

I've had a look on Ebay, I can see a Motad system that's 4.99 at the mo
    with £10 P&P, but no system that's £25 P&P

I've got a spare set of Zephyr downpipes if you want 'em, but I rather
suspect they'd be a little oversized.

  5. Main difference I can see, apart from the looks, is that it has two
balance pipes rather than one, though I can't see that'll matter.

Main point is if I fit a 4-2, I'd rather it was utterly original, or a
    replica.

I can see the silencers on that one already beginning to "bubble" and
they aren't replaceable as separate items, so on balance, a 4-1 would
probably be better, but thanks anyway.

  6. This one:

He didn't quote for p&p costs, so I emailed him and asked.

I get really pissed off with sellers who do that. Parcel post is a
tenner or thereabouts, and I'd happily add a few quid for the packing,
but charging £25 is just robbery.

Last exhaust I flogged, I think I charged £12 for p&p, and I told him
    so.

  7. They'd probably fit, actually - the 650/750 series all seem to have the
same size manifolds - but see other replies.

  8. Doh! What I meant was they *are* replaceable separately but I don't
think you can get the silencers any more.

You can still get a brand new 4-4 system for a Z1 for a grand, though...

    Bad Form Post:

Well, 'tis done, and very neatly too. One section of header was just
perforated rust, so he patched in a five-inch section of header pipe
robbed from a defunct Honda 400 Four system I had knocking around. And
the balance pipe was simply deleted. So we have a four-into-two system
    again.

It won't last forever, but it'll certainly do for Chimay and maybe for
a few months beyond. After that, we'll see. I might flog it, or keep
it, and if I keep it, I'll probably go the stainless replica route.

Incidentally, neighbour who did the welding has got a Kawasaki Z1000R
Eddie Lawson Replica for sale. In original white, complete (including
the fairing), stock except for a Neta exhaust, about 40,000 miles.
Needs restoring or re-commissioning, really. Corrosion on alloy, on the
wheels, fasteners, etc. Paint's a bit scrappy here & there. Engine's
supposed to be lovely. He only wants a grand for it. Anyone interested?

  10. I had a feeling you might react. Pavlov's dogs have nothing on you and a
    nice old air-cooled Kawasaki.

It needs work, definitely (I mean, there's no fluid in the front brakes
atm so you won't be riding it away) but it's worth a grand all day long
    IMHO. And then some.

Careful on left handers, the sidestand lug is a hefty bitch on that
model. When I was working for K Motorcycles we had no end of those in
for left hand side damage repairs.

Anyone remember the Bike Magazine test Z1000R? My best mate Gus had
already semi-written that same bike off by stuffing it into a chemist
shop window opposite our bike shop, that happened when the sidestand lug
dug in and launched him skywards. That was a fortight before Bike also
managed to ditch it on a left-hander for exactly the same reason after
K's had hastily semi-rebuilt it for Kawasaki's test fleet.

Kawasaki UK tried to claim off Bike's insurance, and also attempted to
get Gus to personally pay for the damage out of his own pocket. Once Gus
had seen the same bike in the magazine - pictured upside down in a ditch
with number plate on full display - he told KMUK to **** off in no
uncertain terms and they pursued EMAP instead.

  14. I remember that prang. The rider was Roland Brown and they got a
fabulous photo sequence of him actually lobbing it.

I also remember when Chris Dabbs, then freelancing for MCI, pranged a
test Kawasaki Turbo at Donington. MCI actually made him pay for it
himself, as he hadn't told them he was going to take it round the track.

Kawasaki provided the parts at cost and he rebuilt it. It was then
    flogged sharpish.

I particularly like "THIS PIPE IS VERY LOUD " .. ooh I can almost hear it
now that little "chirrup" during gear changes and that burbling on the
    overrun ;)

LOL, they were lovely bikes, IMHO, bit tall for a short arse like me, but
    still nice.

And there's just *something* about an old air-cooled Zed engine. That
lovely rasp from the engine and that feeling you get that the damn
though would withstand a hit from a bazooka. And the way they always
pull so hard that you keep finding yourself footing for another gear
    beyond top.

And didn't the Lawson Reps look just horny? No wonder they borrowed the
    styling for the ZRX series,

Yep ... although being a purist I prefered the 1015cc ones to the 998cc (?)
version in the J's onwards. That's not to say I dislike the later motors
    though.
I keep finding myself checking out the 5200 quid otr deals on ZRX1200 Lawson
Reps. Next year is bike changing year and they're on the list. :)

I had a proper Kerker full race system on my first VF750F, just like the
Yank team ran on their Transatlantic Races bikes. It was horrendously
loud and spat 2 foot blue flames on the overrun.
