Gents, you know who you are...

So the Z500 (with sidecar) needs to be in fine fettle for the
    Elephantentreffen in January.

I've sorted out the issues with the sidecar, serviced the engine
including replacing the coils/condensers/points. However, on occasion,
when I give it throttle WFO for some time, say 2 or 3 minutes, it
sometimes loses power; probably only one cylinder. Throttling off seems
    to address this.

What's this likely to be? I don't think it's ignition due to the new
coils/plugs/condensers/plug caps/points. So is it crap in a carb?
    damaged diaphragm?

I really don't want to strip the fucking carbs if I can avoid it since
they're prolly welded in place with 27 year old rubber...

New coils, the old ones had damaged leads (cracked) and one of the coils
was cracked. You're right about the leads being fixed to the coils.
Done all of the above with the sole exception of the shims. Am a little
reluctant to do this 'cos I'm lazy. Suppose it would make sense to have
a look at the cams etc. but to be honest it all sounds fine.

    **** off.
Sounds like fuel starvation. Is there a fuel filter involved anywhere?

Don't think so unless it's one of the mesh types in the tank. Will try
it with the tap turned to "prime". Simon Batey may have hit the nail on
the head about the vacuum tap. Could also look at the breather in the
    cap I suppose.

Oh, I'm sure they are but:

    1) There's already damage in that area caused by the fecking muppets
overtightening a too-long screw in the cam cover casing.
    2) All the rubber bits will be trash.

It's on the list; together with (possibly) rebuilding the fuel tap,
balancing the carbs and er... getting it MOTd.

Oil and filter is a given but shims? I wouldn't - unless they're making
    a horrid noise now.

It's the tap, tap filter or one of the needle valves is running slightly
    slow.

You may want to chop the plugs when it starts running off - I'm pretty
sure the carb giving trouble will run weaker.

Airline on the fuel inlet may blast the shit out. Same on the tap in the
    may save rebuilding it.

If it's the tap filter wouldn't it be easier to cut the fucker out and
fit an inline one (or would that risk gunge-ing the tap innards up with
    shite from the tank)?

    Good point.

It's only a Kwack anyway - I'd probably risk it.

Well, today's 300 mile training run suggests it's the vacuum tap.
Moving it to "prime" removed the problem on two occasions.

The Trophy had a couple of tiny hidden filters in the T-pieces of the fuel
lines. Once cleaned of rusty gunk, the fuek starvation symptoms went away.

I've booked my ferry crossing. [1] Now I have to make the Benly fit
for purpose. Can someone take it away and bring it back when it is
    done please?

Hmm.. UK leg; 206 miles to Harwich ferry, then 900km to Thurmansbang.

Double it... so that's about 1500 miles.

Well it'll certainly build my shoulders up. Whilst the outfit doesn't
pull on a level surface, throw in a bit of slope or camber and I'm
constantly making adjustments. Yesterday was quite hard work; must
spend more time in the gym. Alternatively I wonder if a steering damper
    would make much difference?

Regarding recovery, I'm afraid if it dies then it's likely to be left
    where it falls.
