Z1000 - any issues?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Nige, May 13, 2007.

  1. No, but you see hardly *any* on the roads. Trundling around London and
the SE every day is as good a guide to "What's out there and what's not"
    as any.
The real mod is that the frame carries the new anti-vibration mountings.
That tells you a *lot* about the old one.
Look, the point is that there are no reasons why you shouldn't buy one,
and plenty why you should buy something else.

Main reason is price - take a Bandit 1250 and a Z1000. Both have
water-cooled engines and are basic fun bikes. And the Kawasaki engine is
a decade old or more, whereas the Suzuki lump is brand new. So, in
theory, the Kawasaki should be nice and cheap - I mean, the development
costs were written off years ago, right?

And the Kawasaki is damn nearly two grand pricier. I just can't see it.
It's always been ridiculously costly. Which is why it doesn't sell.

Its used values are appallingly low, as a result. This makes it a decent
    buy used, I suppose.

  2. I think this is unfair.[/QUOTE]

    Yes, possibly.
My real objection to it is cost - it's stupidly over-priced. See other
    posting.

Fair enough. I just thought that "steer clear" was a little harsh,
given it appears to be a capable bike, and I sort of like the noise the
4 pipes make when it's opened up.

That's the sort of evidence I like to see, but it must be an area thing,
because I'm getting sick to the back teeth of seeing them. fortunately, not
many are orange coz they were only that colour for the first year.

    Trundling around London and
It's a good guide to what's out there in London and the SE nothing else. As
odd as it may seem, the country doesn't actually end at Watford Gap.

It does? It only tells me that the Zed vibrates, but as I've yet to ride a
bike that doesn't, it doesn't really tell me anything useful, but my own Zed
doesn't vibrate nearly as much as the Speed Triple or the SuperDuke of two
    of my friends.
The devlopment costs of the engine would seem to be ongoing. Haven't they
just re-designed it again for the new version? Smaller throttle bodies,
    smaller valves etc?
It's more than a Bandit in cost, that's true, but it's MUCH more than a
Bandit in handling, acceleration, top end and looks too. It's funky damnit:)

In London and the SE. Up here it sells.
And Bandits retain a high used value?. That must be why my brother can't
stop buying the things for pennies.

    This makes it a decent
It makes it a staggeringly good buy 2nd hand. I paid 5 grand for mine with
441 miles on it and in the following 14000, it's not had a single failure
apart from a (possible) warped disc. It's quick enough that I can stay with
most people I ride with and that's without feeling like I'm on the edge of
it's capablities. It's as reliable as ANYONE could expect or want (100%
reliability is pretty good I'd say) and it attracts a lot more attention
than a Bandit does, which tells me people like it. Mind you, the fact that
people actually DO tell me they like it gives me a better clue.

Now I don't have a problem with someone who's owned or even ridden one for
more than an hour saying they should be "steered clear of" because they have
an opinion based on experience, but to warn people off them just because you
*think* they're not up to much is a little strange, to say the least and
it's not the first time you've said it either. I wonder what the reaction
would be if I said that Gixxer thou's or a ZX10-R's are best left alone
because they look like they'd make my back hurt?

Hey, I'm colourblind, any advice I give on colour co-ordination should
be taken with that in mind. That's why I mostly stick to black.

  9. OK, fine, well, I'm making it here. I didn't make any reference to
colour, either. Orange is a sales killer - how many top-selling bikes
    have been painted orange?

Kawaski green, of course, is a different matter.....

  10. No, and last time I mentioned price and depreciation as well....

  11. Yes, absolutely.
Yes, I was thinking about this, but not many people bought the orange
    one...
    As above
    Yes. Still hardly best-sellers, though.
    Bah humbug. Two-tone colour scheme.

    And I'd add:

    Honda CB500T

    Honda CB125J

    Suzuki TS185

    Early RD250

It's still not a popular colour.

One of my pals (the one with the Speed Triple) is colour blind and he's a

How about one of the classic bikes of all time.

Urban Tiger Fireblade, or to put it another way - beige and orange.
