Strikes me as a bit hypocritical at times, though, that you'll
cheerfully, even gleefully, acknowledged that you haven't a clue about
soap stars, pop idols, or whetever else the yoof of today are goiing
on about, but then are quite happy to assume that never having heard
of some "fucking actress' _you_ know about makes me an idiot.

Well, I guess that's a half-way reasonable point. I think I have a
sliding scale of culture, with, say, the contestants on Big Brother
down at one end of the scale (let's call this "1", and the like of von
Karajan at the other (say "10"). I tend to know about stuff from 4 to
8, and it's probably just human nature to look down on people who
focus on 1~3 and feel inversely snobby about those up at 9 & 10.
