now you're just being silly - If you expand your universe of
consideration far enough, everything is a niche.

Within the universe of motorcycling, the GSX-R1000 is not a niche
    product.

    How's the coffee up there?
I did the never taking my full entitlement to holidays thing in the
late 1990s. Then got divorced. Maybe burnt and darsy don't like their
    partners that much?

My team isn't big enough to require a seperate team leader - just 10
proper team members and a pool of 2-3 virtual members in Paris. But we
work a system where I can delegate tasks to my peers in Paris (and
vice versa) if it makes more sense for the person physically to be
located where the task needs to be done.
I wouldn't insist my permies take their holidays - I have HR to do
that for me. For my contractors, most of them take off fewer than 10
days per year, and at least one or two take a lot less than this.
we get 27 (plus I have 3 carried over) - it is a lot, but I've burned
quite a few by taking a lot of long weekends/working 4 day weeks.
I just delegate everything and let them get on with it - seems to have
    worked so far.
the French do things their way. Not working long hours / taking lots
of holidays doesn't seem to be regarded as a problem.

    Greedy sad cunts!

    I work a 4 day week so there's 52 days a year for starters though TBF I
don't often take anything other than that off.

Ducati does, after a fashion. When my mate Niall bought his 750SS, he
was startled to get a call from Italy. The marketing dept at Ducati
was doing a survey of recent customers, and among other things, asked
him which machines (out of a list of bikes they had prepared) he'd
also considered buying before opting for the Duke.

There was a Yamaha ThunderAce on there and, I think, a Suzuki GS500
    twin. He was utterly baffled.

I think that "not working long hours / taking lots of holidays"[1]
should be the norm, trather than "the French way".

[1] i.e. taking the allowable number of days p.a.

I had a Triumph survey sent to me shortly after I got the Sprint ST.
This covered all sorts from what other bikes were considered to how the
    dealer fared during the sale.

I was going to disagree, but I can't find it in my heart to do so -
being fair, the ones who take the least holidays are my desktop
support guys, and I wouldn't encourage them to take more time off,
because it causes me problems getting cover.

oh I agree, and I take all my holidays if I can, and I don't work
particularly long hours - I do have the advantage the I only see my
line manager about 5-6 days a year, and have a Blackberry so he's no
idea what actual hours I do in the office.

neither yours or Tog's examples are what I meant by "market research".

Post-sales satisfaction surveys probably aren't used to guage what
sort of input is given to the manufacturer's R&D division.

I had 30 days to take from April and I'm worried I might have to use
sickies to supplement them before the holiday year's finished.
