Chatting to the owner of a bike shop in town earlier, & got on the
subject of 2-stroke oils, & inevitably Castrol R. He mentioned selling
200 litres of the stuff last week to a local speedway team, which made
me boggle a bit, as I was sure all speedway bikes were 4 strokes.

Turns out they are all 4 strokes, but they use a total loss system -
fill the oil tank (in the frame) with Castrol R, it runs through the
engine, & just pours out the bottom. Presumably castor oil's
biodegradable, hence the use of Castrol R.

 

Is it not more to do with burning Methanol?

I have absolutely no idea. Does that react with other types of oil then?

 

Mineral oils don't mix with Methanol. That's obviously vital for
two-strokes as you say, but presumably could also cause problems on a
four stroke. I know a lot of people using Methanol still favour Castrol
R, despite there being synthetics that are suitable now, but perhaps
it's just habit.

There were two bikes at Loton yesterday burning dope, and some of the
500 Cooper cars. They have to have an orange disc displayed to warn
marshals there may be fire without a lot of obvious flames.
