  1. Not that surprising, given that kieselguhr is what Nobel used to
    stabilise nitroglycerine to make dynamite.

  2. It's possibly an irritant, but being calcic it's probably nowhere
near as dangerous as silicosis or asbestosis (though I found one reference
to an amorphous silica called diatomine).

Hmm, where did you get that from?
And have you still got a source for it?
Poultry keepers pay around £8 for 500 grammes, it is used to kill
mites/parasites, as the fine granules stick to them, then dry them out.
totally safe for the hens apparently, who can have it sprinkled onto
them, or left scattered around the hen house for dust baths.
I've tried it, and it certainly works.

First check Yellow Pages for Chemical Supplies, they should help or be
able to point you at another supplier who can.
Agricultural suppliers should also stock it for the chicken farmers.
When we lived in South Africa we used it in swimming pool filters so
it might also be used in the UK depending on what types of filter are
popular, so swimming pool specialists might also have some but probably
expensive as pools are a luxury in the UK.

  5. It's used in all sorts of industrial filters, especially kerosene.

What kind of mites were you suffering with?

Red mite. Little bastards only come out at night, I was wondering why a
few birds had drops of blood on them, but it wasnt blood, just squashed
    mites.
Sprinkled the powder all over, and havent had a problem since.

That used to be one of my favourite games on a Sunday afternoon when I
was on the 'breakdown' team waiting for work.

  10. A full scuba tank exploding is like half a stick of gelignite. Not pretty.
And that is just air at 250 bar.
