Well obviously, you'd want to fill it partly with acetylene and partly
    with air / O2 really....

    Tee hee.
Me and my brother used to fill inner tubes with acetylene and throw them
    on bonfires ;)

If it hadn't amounted to a firearms offence we would have made a mortar
from some 3" tube and a sparkplug powered by a smidgin of petrol as
    well......

And you'd want to make sure that the bag was wet to reduce the chances
of a static spark making life a little too exciting.

    Yes indeed.

In fact it would be safer to no recommend filling said bag with
Hydrogen, Chlorine and a flash gun.

Or a **** off big commercial bin bag, especially when you tie it off with
masking tape 4 ft long with the first 2 ft soaked in thinners. And for fucks
    sake, NO matches.

Absolutely no connection, The quantities of acetylene are not remotely
    similar.

  13. OTOH, it's perfectly safe, on the midnight shift, to fill a hot
metal vessel with acetylene and then fire subatomic particles into it
through a very thin plastic window. It was my colleagues experiment,
but when he came to this part he always found other things to finish off
first[1]. Eventually, I was on midnight shift...
Acetylene also decomposes exothermically (releases energy as heat)
above about 15 psi, so pressurised cylinders are filled with acetone and
an absorber to prevent this happening. Always use and store acetylene
    cylinders upright!

[1] He was worried that the ionisation from the muons might catalyse an
    exothermic polymerisation.

Do not know, you are the one who associated dutch nutters with a large
    devastating explosion.

  17. No, but it affects whether the acetone solvent stays within the
cylinder to do its job of supressing decomposition.
It's possible, but I've not seen mention of it. A prime requirement
is not to have any large voids where a pocket of gas could form, Perhaaps
you are thinking of some fuel tanks which are filled with something similar
to steel wool whose job is to suppress ignition of vapours by conducting
heat away before a chain reaction could develop (similar to the principle
    of the Davy Lamp).

Cylinders are packed with a "porous mass" - see
    http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg327.pdf

Note that it's been a couple of years since "under the arches"
garage/workshops were allowed to have OxyAce on-site, due to the distruction
to the rail service if a cylinder goes unstable.

I know of one mechanic that was given a MIG set as compensation from his
    landlord.

It was a very long time ago that I thought I was told they were filled
with metal wool. I could be completely wrong. Ta.
