When it stopped being a humourous quip and became a direct personal
attack on someone who doesn't deserve it. Of all the posters here, Paul
probably deserves about the highest level of personal respect, and your
comment was completely out of order.

Reading back now I don't think Pauls little jibe weas meant strictly in
humour after all, more to the point. But I'm not sensitive.
Yeah well Benny Hill wasn't nearly as funny as Kenny Everett I'll grant you
but he had his moments and knew how to pick the extras and the value of
    schoolies.

You appear to have enough reservation to want to write preferences in
    quotes.

    Just sayin'.

No need to be silly. Some of UKRM's denziens *have* been eye openers. PC is
    hardly one of them.

at the risk of being tarred and feathered for going against the grain
here, Hog's original comment that has generated so much bile was - to
me - an obviously sarcastic reductio ad absurdum argument aimed at
suggesting how off-the-mark he felt PC's comparison of him to Kenny
was, contrasting a stereotype with another.

But, hey, maybe it's just me.

I'm not going to defend the silly ****, but it's hardly "out of line"
    for ukrm.

    Well quite.

Not that I *actually* mind in the slightest being compared to a boyhood
hero. Even if he did sign out on a miserably low note.

"Personally insulting"! Catch yourself on FFS

Calling me Right Wing or Facist is "personally insulting" but this is the
ukrm classroom and one takes it good humour, even when it becomes ever so
stale. Possibly a bit like the Hairdresser comments.

If I had an issue with Paul and wanted to insult him or anything else or
anyone else I'd pick up the phone and do it directly. With the one obvious
NG exception. But I'd really have to not like him and of course I do.

AFAIAC humour on the NG is ribald and has no bounds and the rule has always
been if you don't like it the door is over there. And IRL posters are always
direct and friendly to a quite remarkable degree. I can only think of 4
people I've met through the NG I wouldn't piss on to put the fire out, and
one of them I've never met.

Well thank you kindly, I don't need any **** to defend me. Here or anywhere

I think he's generally got a few people's backs up at the moment so it's
not taking much to seem to have stepped over the line.

There's always a line. It's pretty blurry though, and obviously varies
    by individual.

Indeed. I'm slightly surprised at the reaction.

That was my take on it as well. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but Hog
isn't an idiot and his response came across as being a pretty well
    thought out personal attack.

I've always been in favour of a no-holds barred approach to ukrm but
if I want to give someone abuse I usually resist going for the full on
personal attack. I'd no more use someones sexual preferences as a
stick to hit them with than I would their ethnic origins or any
    disability they may suffer from.

It's an open group here and anyone can post what they like but if you
get some hammer for it then take it on the chin and get on with it.
I've been told I've been a **** plenty of times and if I agree I'll
apologise and if I don't then the complainant can just **** off and
die. Hog obviously thinks he's done nothing wrong and that's ok, he's
entitled to his opinion as is everyone else.

How do you feel about accepting apologies?

    Lozzo, May 12, 2010
  18. Owen

    Andy Bonwick Guest

Pretty much how I feel about offering them in that if I'm wrong I
apologise and that's it over and done with, if someone else apologises
then that's it and it's forgotten.

The important thing to me is that I try to avoid posting something I
wouldn't repeat to someone in person and I don't think Hog would have
said what he posted if he'd been face to face with Paul.

Well, if you insist on seeing snow, the mountains (~7000') are just 45
    minutes away.
And the desert is just a few minutes beyond that.

Ah, nothing like a bit of hyperbole. San Diego and California have
huge problems, but little of it has to do with any Mexicans who are
here, legally or not. Most of our local problems stem from a prior
city council who decided to fund an outrageous city employee pension
fund with non-existent money. The mayor's stance is a complete non-
issue. Who pays attention to the words any politician speaks? He
shares power with the city council and any laws enacted need broad
approval. Immigration is a national issue. The effect on us locally is
that the feds arrest illegals and put them in local jails, forcing the
locals to pay. If they're going to incarcerate them, the federal
government should pay. BTW, one of the major state problems is the
prison guard union, who demand huge salaries, and ...well, that gets
into issues that are better left for when I don't have to pay for I-
    net access by the minute.
I'm sitting Bolzano, Italy, right now. Some call it Bozen. This place
is incredible. _Every place_ (streets, neighborhoods, etc,) has 2
names, German and Italian. You can ask someone where a place is, and
if you don't ask in the language they're familiar with, they won't
know. I don't know how they manage, but nobody seems to care. Since
San Diego is so close to the border, I've always accepted that many
people here speak Spanish. No biggie. Now, if you want to talk about
the difference between English and American...
