Ok, so having got the MX5 back on the road, the story continues with the
other cage. The repair co. originally had been given the go-ahead to do
the work from the assessor, some two months ago. Long story short,
they've now decided it's a total loss after all, and I'm still waiting
    for their offer.

In the meantime, they've written to me and told me that the policy I had
is now cancelled, null and void. (eg can't use it for CIHAGM). IIRC,
this policy had at least 6 months left to run. When I queried it, they
told me that I _may_ get a reduction in the premium if replace the car
and insure through them, but not guaranteed.

    Is this usual?

Yup, it's fairly normal for a policy to be ended if the vehicle it
covers is a write-off. If you look through the small print it wil be
    in there somewhere.

Yes, it is universal, I believe. They won't won't pay claims until all
the premium has been paid too which can irritate those paying by
    instalments.

I was insured with eBike when my 125 was nicked. They paid out as
soon as we'd agreed a figure (I agreed to their first offer, which was
£50 less than I'd bought it for), then 3 months later after I'd passed
my DAS, they transferred the remaining couple of months of the policy
onto the Bandit for no extra charge.

    Muchos impressed I was.

It is if they write the vehicle off Simon. A ****'s trick, but a common
****'s trick and "they all do that sir". They "did" that with my bike until
I pointed out to them that for the bike to have been written off, it
would've needed an inspection which it never had and even if it had, a
broken mirror would hardly constitute a write off even in these expensive
    days.

They re-instated my policy and gave me a discount on the renewal.

    Incompetent? Just a bit.

Back in the day when I was an ins broker, it was pretty much typical
for the cheaper, Lloyds syndicate type policies to do this, whereas the
    larger inscos didn't.

There are certainly exceptions. My Thunderace was insured with Equity
Red Star via DirectChoice. Not only was the settlement for the
write-off prompt and fair but the policy (with about 7 months to run)
continued and, with a bit of extra dosh, has now been transferred to
the new bike. I was paying a bit extra for NCD protection and that's
applicable to the new bike as well. I think that's good.

They did that when I wrote the 9R off.

Strangely Direct Line didn't when I wrote the Porsche off, I changed
the policy to the BMW and they sent me a refund as the BMWs a lower
    group.
