    Are you sure? Using "it's" in the possessive sense - the batteries are the
    flounceometer's (same here).

    Why is that incorrect?

    The possessive is "its", and the contraction of "it is" is "it's" - I
    thought everybody understood that. How else would you tell them apart?
    IIRC the possessive "'s" was originally a contraction of "has".

    Ah, the old it/it's chestnut.

    It's is a contraction of "it is".

    Its is a possessive adjective in its own right and therefore does not
    need an apostrophe.

    I don't know why, but it is a basic rule of written English.
