Which really isn't a lot. The Golf Estate probably has more in common
floorpan-wise with the Bora, than it does with the Golf hatch, but I
    have never checked.

The basic floorpan only extends as far as the front seat crossmember.
Beyod that the Golf and Bora are completely different. What this means,
in effect is that the two cars share the same front floor section, front
doors, bulkhead, fuel tank, rear axle, drivetrain and a few other minor
sub-assemblies. Not a lot in common really when you consider what makes
    a complete car.
Which only goes a little way up the total length of the whole floorpan.
From front seat crossmember back they are different.
If they'd just called it a Golf we would never have started this
discussion in the first place. Fact is, it's a Bora and as Steve not so
cleverly shot himself in the foot by pointing out, even VW say it's more
than just a Golf with a boot, even if they do come out with some glaring
    inaccuracies in their own blurb.

  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Bear <>
    saying something like:

Same here; ever since I had a go in one I've lusted.

I'd feel more comfortable heaving a Pantera around than a Miura [1]. The
Pantera struck me as more of a workmanlike brute than thorougbred.

Ideally, I'd have a Pan for weekdays and a Miura for weekends.

[1] Never having driven a Miura, I can only speculate what ownership
would be like, but the costs of keeping one running/repaired would
dissuade me from giving it a bootful too many times.

I'm pretty easy to sell to, to be honest.
Well, I do know myself reasonably well.

  5. It was supposed to have been fitted with the 225bhp version
of the engine, as fitted to the Audi TT.

Hmm. Don't care about rear legroom - it's load space I'm interested
in. I have to get all my guitar gear in, occasionally a mountain bike
or two, and various other large loads.
Yeah, the ST24 is meant to be a great car (or was - this was a couple
of years ago). Even Clarkson owned one.

That was marketing speak so they could sell the Bora as a premium
    product.

Sounds jolly interesting. But, if they're more expensive than a
Skyline, surely they're outside my budget?

Champ was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Not quite - my Skyline cost me 4k (max budget was 5k), and decent
late-model twin-turbo Legacies start between 5-6k if you buy from an
importer, 8k should get you a good GTB which has the added bonus of
Porsche-designed Bilstein suspension. I was looking at a fairly cheap
one but that had been run in the UK already and did look a bit
neglected (plus the PO had a dog, and I don't buy cars from dog owners
as I'm allergic to most types of dog hair).

Or you can go completely overboard and buy the demonstrator from the
UK Blitz[1] importer which has lots of expensive goodies on and
300-something bhp. AFAIK they want 13.5k for it.

I think they're well within your budget which is why I suggested
them. Plus, on most the only giveaways that it isn't the grandpa model
is the small bonnet scoop for the intercooler and the higher-spec
alloys. Oh, and the fact that it does wander off towards the horizon
at a rather less relaxed pace.

    Grimly Curmudgeon says...
As many know, I worked on classic Jaguars for a few years. The two E-
Types they filmed being crushed by the digger were swopped for already
well damaged dummies and I supplied retrim kits for both the cars used
    in the driving sequences.

I actually managed to blag a drive in 848 CRY[1], the red roadster used
in the film and the 12th E-Type built, after it had been restored.
Philip Porter, who owns that one and 9600 HP was a regular customer of
mine. I also supplied the interior retrim kit for 9600 HP - the Geneva
Show car and the very first E-Type built, used almost exclusively by
Stirling Moss to mosey round London in - which is now finally in for
restoration. IIRC it has reverted back to LHD after being converted to
RHD a few years after being built.

[1] The first E-Type to be entered into competition and originally
registered 2 BBC. That car has quite a history to it.

I guess the Leon will be a bit smaller than your Saab.
And, having looked around Autotrader, there appears to be a few decent
value ones around at the moment.

The new one is a lot more 'normal' looking. Spoiled the charm of it,
IMHO, but it'll help it's popularity.
