Why? I'm sure it's a great, fun car. The question is whether I'm big
enough to be seen driving a Skoda, and I don't need a test drive to
    try and answer that question.

There's quite a few modern cars I like, to be honest.
Well, that's why I have a Sabb now, see.
I've got off road parking. And "the square" is *very* select.
Ugh. Hell will freeze over before I drive a landy. Slow,
uncomfortable, slow, noisy, thirsty - what on earth do people see in
them? Anyway, for most of my "getting around town", I walk.
Too small. Too Audi. I'd like and S4 estate. Wonder what they can
    be bought for now?

**** the lot of 'em is what I say. It may not be a huge shop, but it's
what I want to do. It's also a hell of a lot more challenging than
    running a larger operation.

Heh. Right state that was, I went down to help with the clearout of the
    building.

Strangely, despite all the top floor being gutted, the fags survived,
caught the builders trying to swipe 'em.

They've managed to rebuild it in under a month, mind. I'd love to see
the kind of bonuses the building contractors were on to do that.

It looks as if it's the same sort of size as a Ford Focus or a
Disastra, so it depends how much load space you need. A quick rummage
on the What Car website comes up with: "Space & practicality 3 out of
    5. Like all Leons, both Cupra models are only average for space.
There’s plenty of room for those in the front, but those in the back
seat have only mediocre legroom and headroom is tight thanks to the
sloping ceiling. Cabin storage is good and the boot is a decent size,
but a high loading lip hinders practicality"

The Octavia OTOH: "Average rear space but a massive boot"

I'm in a similar situation, having just taken the option of an
allowance instead of a Renault Laguna. If I decide to replace my Saab
9000, I'm currently thinking along the lines of a Mundaneo ST24.

The front isn't too bad, but the rear is a touch on the bulky side -
the Jennifer Lopez of the VAG range?

The recent restyle the Octavia has gone through has a touch of the
    Audi A3 about it though.

There's an outfit near Oxford remaps them up to 155bhp. Handles well,
comfy, economical, carries loads of stuff, good elevated view over traffic.
    What's not to like?

Terrible aerodynamics apparently. I've heard they wanted to take off and
went awfully light on the steering when you got above 100mph.

I loved the shape too, and I neary cried the first time I watched the
begining of the original Italian Job.

Champ was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
*If* you don't mind going grey import Scooby, check out the recentish
Legacy Turbos. Most of them are estates with very useful (read large)
load area, they're nice to drive long-distance because they tend to
have escaped the attention of the drainpipe exhaust folks and they're
moderately quick[1]. And they do handle well.

Plus, added bonus - they're considerably cheaper to insure than the
    comparable Imprezas.

In fact, had I found one that was within my budget I wouldn't have
    bought a Skyline.

[1] Not much heavier than the Impreza, 4WD, with either 260bhp
(slushbox) or 280bhp for the manual. With all the usual tuning
    possibilities.

I've just been reading the 'ownership' page of that site. It mentions
chin spoilers - as if, if I owned one, I'd risk the fucker at its top
    speed anyway.

Purely a high days and holidays car; just for impressing the shit out of
those who would know one to see one.
Saw that. Bastards. Mind you, surely it was a fucked one anyway.

OK, a little too much money perhaps, but I'll give you 20% of what I get
from flogging your bits on eBay so that'll help :)

The Octavia's in for its 20,000 service tomorrow at Bamfords. I'll see
    you there.

Go out and look at the badge.
    Gated enclave with security guards?
I can just visualise you in one, peering through the flat glass, mouth
    pursed in distaste...
Have you driven one or just read about them? They don't seem to be that
    well received:

If you want an Audi estate and don't need the big horsepower, an A6 might do
    the job:
