Saw loads of those. We just had a Chevy Trailblazer. Which, I have to
say, was excellent in the snow. It only had 700 miles on it when we
colected it, and the snow tyres had nice sharp edges on the tread. We
did a lot of miles on snow covered roads, and it was incredibly sure
    footed.
Don't get me started on the auto box thing again! The Chevy tranny
was just *awful*. The kickdown is just actuated by a measure of how
far you've got the peddle down, so on mountain roads it was leaping
around the box like a mad thing. And, it took so long to actually
kick down and then accelerate that by the time it got going you'd
forgotten what you'd wanted it for. I resorted to holding it in 2nd
    for overtaking.

    Heh.

We had to wait for one of the mountain roads to open one morning, as
there'd been so much snow overnight - there were about 20 cars
queueing, with 3 foot drifts either side. This bloke in a raised
F350, with noisy pipes and big snow tyres just drove it into the
drift, floored it, and cleared about 20 foot of road without a plough!
I think he had locked diffs too.

They really are pretty good, and cheap, so it's no surprise they're
    popular.
We'd booked an SUV, but they were a bit short of them and had some
trucks hanging around, so they asked us if we'd mind upgrading for
free. I was tempted to ask for a reduction to cover the extra fuel,
    but thought that might be pushing it a bit ;-}

Pretty much my experience with mountain driving in any auto I've had
over there before. The RAM was exceptional, not just 'cos it didn't
need to hunt (having sufficient power) but also due to the smooothness
and predictability of the kickdown. It was also a 5-speed box, which
    probably helped.
