I've seen one punting along quite happily at around a ton.

I couldn't quite see whether or not the occupants had ear-plugs in or not,
    though...

Valve clearances? - surely no modern car engine still needs those doing.

I'm not a car mechanic, I just know bike engines do.

Most car engines use hydraulic lifters to set the clearances these days.

There are some exceptions - both our Alfas have manually adjusted
clearances, and the Cinq. did, but I'm pretty sure the later Seicentos
have now been given hydraulic lifters.

Ahh, useful to know. Thanks Steve.

I wonder why they've not got around to doing like that with bikes, I'd
guess it's not efficient at high revs.

Alternative: Dodge Ram V10 pickup, with a demountable van body.

    Heh.

  10. That's exactly the reason. They pump up at even medium revs and hold
the valves open. Even on V8 rovers when breathed on, a popular mod is
to chuck the hydraulic lifters out if you are going over 6000 rpm
    regularly.

The Honda CBX750 had them. ISTR it's more to do with the extra height
and bulk it adds to the engine than anything else.

Quite frankly I'm finding the whole idea of 19 year olds and any kind of
    cardigan disturbing.
