Yes, but is it art?

I'd have thought so, given MP were simply repeating the original
    conversation.

Really? Oscar Wilde died in 1900 though, didn't he?

Whoops, you're right. And Whistler died in 1903.

    <struggling>

Ah, but the printed source is dated 1907, so polloi like us wouldn't
    have heard until then.

I'm slightly proud that I've been to all 4 Tate galleries. The
Liverpool one is definitely worth a visit, as is St Ives.
Apart from the swearing, you sound just like my mum. She always
shakes her head and raises her eyebrows when ever she looks at this
    hanging on my wall:

It's a good job that the "Key to lines" has "Footballers" next to the
silver one, otherwise you'd never have known!

I can't quite work out where it should go on the table of what's the
    best art.

I'm guessing better than Monet, because it actually looks like a real
underground map, but below Rolf, because it's less original, and
    Patterson really just copied it.

This art stuff is easy, I don't know why I didn't get into it sooner.

You just wait until you try perfecting Brian Sewell's accent.

It says a lot that Hirst, for example, doesn't do the production
himself. He'll do the design and manage the production but the donkey
work is done by paid craftsmen and engineers in his studio/workshop.

Is Hirst the artist behind the work? Certainly. Did he "make" it?
Probably not. But the same applies to most of the old masters, they had
students and other underlings in their studios doing the grunt work in
    exactly the same way.

I still don't see a) why anyone would want either of them hung on the
wall, nor b) how they could possibly be considered 'art' or even
mentioned in the same breath thereas.

Indeed. And Rope's statement nicely encapsulates the 'up their own
arseholes' outlook of the so called 'art' establishement.

"Thought processes behind it"; what a load of unmitigated bollocks.

Your position is well known and was clearly stated in the Power of Art -
    Picasso thread.
I see no ... , so does that mean you think the hidden
meanings and motivations arise without conscious thought, or that they
also have no place in art? From what you said in the Picasso thread I
    suspect the latter.
