  1. SOBoxer to garage this ack emma, straight through the MoT, bought a tax disk
on the way home so now it's legal again.

result, and double-result 'co MOTs are about to go up (by about 50%) - any
bikes you're thinking of MoTing, now's the time.

£15.55 to £23.80 on the 1st Aug 2005, to be pedantically
precise (and if you think that's bad, wait 'till you take
the car in for its next ticket).

  6. Christ. My local dealer charges me a tenner, cash-in-hand.

Not any more, he won't. Just as well most of my MOTs are due this month
    and next.

I can see the new price rise hitting some of us harder than
    others...
Just wait until Alistair Darling insists on you forking out
for a road-charging GPS box on each bike - that'll really sting.

And remember that you can take an existing MOT cert in up to a month
ahead of time, and the new one runs from the date of expiry of the old

Don't reckon he will though, will he? A report I heard said they'd just
be for cars and commercial vehicles.

Presumably, these 'black boxes' aren't purely passive and will need some
power to operate... 6V AC version to run off a direct lighting system?

I knew that, problem here is they're all at least month after the 1st
August. More importantly, however, the MOTs are timed not to coincide
with any other major monthly expenditure (tax, insurance, holiday spends
    etc).

  15. I wouldn't call an MoT a major expenditure. A dozen of them might be....

"Potential" expenditure and there are 4, one being the van.

  17. Ah, right, yes, I see what you mean.

With a new MoT in mind, I have been fitting new head races to the Benly
    this evening.

This is one of my most hated jobs. It's a bastard on bikes where
everything is carried on the bars, especially when the forks have
shrouds between the yokes and below, and you have to line them all up
    and...

Oh, you know the scene. Anyway, it's done now.

  18. Oooohhhhh, *nice* point. All of a sudden the Benly and the CB125S look
like having investment potential. Oh, and the DT50 and DT175....

Actually, I think bikes will be the acid test of the road pricing. If
the scheme truly is to relieve congestion, then bikes ought to be road
price-free. If, however, they include them, it'll only prove that this
is (as we suspect) merely another stealth tax.

    I think it was on Thu, 9 Jun 2005 21:37:37 +0100 that
    (The Older Gentleman) announced
    to the world:
I'm sure that I read somewhere on the BBC website that there would be
exemptions along the lines of the London Congestion Charge, i.e.
bikes, PSVs and leccy cars wouldn't have to pay. Just had another look
and couldn't find the article again, I think it was posted yesterday.

I can't see how they can dump fuel/road tax and replace it with road
charging unless they do a big-bang implementation nationwide. How are
they going to fit gawd knows how many million gps/satnav devices in
older cars for the change-over? I reckon there'll be a huge market for
60's 12v +ve earth BMC and Rootes Group cars all of a sudden. Anyone
got an mid-60s MGB they want to flog?

If this was to be done I'd suspect the equipment would be available and
how you fitted and powered it was your problem but be fitted and working
    it must...

TBH I don't think we'll see this system; more likely a creeping
privatisation of the road system and the roads through towns and villages
    heavily restricted and/or 'calmed'.
