Ok.. i actually listened to you people for once :)

Was over at blandies motorcycles (sleaford) today, and he has an S reg yammy
dragstar 400 in there.. he's had it a long time (tax ran out in 2002) he
says it's restricted licence legal.. under 33bhp, and it is a lovely bike..
but just a bit too expensive for us.. it's an import.. but with about 2500
miles on the clock, and he wants £2300 for it....

i actually prefer the 'standard' virago's.. the ones with the twin chromed
shockers etc, so i decided to get an insurance quote anyway...

    £250 for a 1998 virago 400 (dragstar 400 is not recognised) that's cheaper
than for a 250.. well actually the same really, i was looking at a 2000
model xv 250, so older bike a little cheaper to insure, even tho it costs
    more.

Sooo, now i'm looking at a bigger bike, i sure would prefer a bike that's
engine is chugging along doing 65 to 70 mph all day long than one thats
screaming along at full pelt to do 65 mph,

I've found a couple of VX 400's for sale, and can get an M reg one for about
£1200, no mention of mileage tho, obviousely not 2500 miles, what's
    considered high mileage on a cruiser with a 400cc V twin engine?? i know a 2
stroke 125 with over 15,000 miles on the origional barrel and bearings is
    worn out,

I also need to know what bhp the XV 400 virago makes.. is this one rideable
on a restricted licence? i've read the drag stars had a lower power engine..
more torque but lower power, but searching for info on the XV 400 dosent
bring much up.. the 250 and 535 bikes all bring up the bikez web site, with
all the info and reviews on it, but the 400 isn't there,

I reckon he should stop looking at all this obscure imported shite and
get a normal straightforward Honda/Yam/Suz/Kawasaki UK model bike. It's
alot easier in the long run.

me too... didn't know the XV 400 was imported.. well had an idea but hoped
    it was a uk model,

Done an insurance quote on a virago 535, only 20 quid more than the 400,
which is £250 cheaper to insure than that siamoto geco 250 cruiser that
    started this all off.

Seems a 535 is the way to go, get her restricted, then after 2 years if i
really need more power, i just whip the restirctor plate out, rather than
sell the bike and get a bigger one,

It's just scaring me that 3 weeks ago a 125 was all i wanted, and now i'm
talking about getting a 500 cc bike, but now i've decided a trailer is the
only way to go for transporting the bike.. i guess i can choose anything..
just need to find a decent one at a good price now.

  5. Do it. The 535 is a really, really nice bike by any standards, never
    mind "Jap custom" standards.

well, that seems to be it.. a virago 535 is for us.. there's one at the
local shop we'll go and have a sit on tommorow.. next to that siamoto
thingy.. i never even looked at the virago because the siamoto has all the
fancy extra's fitted.. running boards, spot lights, crash bars etc, and
looks so much nicer.. but it all cosmetic stuff really.. mutton and lamb
comes to mind (and not in a perverted way.. honnest :)

Now i just need to find where i can get a restrictor kit fitted for a decent
price, seen prices ranging from 90 to 150 quid.. but then there's extra for
the paperwork, anyone on here able to fit a 33bhp restrictor and do all the
paperwork for cheaper???.. or should i look on ebay alongside those basu
    exhaust stickers :)

  7. Have a bloody good look *underneath* it. There's a lot of exhaust
balance-pipery and collector-boxery that's hidden from view, and it can
    corrode badly.

But yes, great bikes, Top whack a ton on a good day, but so driveable:
lovely torque and power spread. Economical, too. And they even handle
    quite well, for cruiser bikes.

Plus plus plus - shaft drive.

Mike at the BLack Horse in Hulland Ward has one for sale with only 67
miles on it. I think YTC did half of those.

Just changed mine, it blew right at the back of the box just at the point
that the excaping exhaust gasses would warm the rear tyre up fast:-(

Remus pipes now fitted, with the S shaped rear downpipe legshield of of the
    OEM exhaust fitted to it.

One other major problem point is the fuel reserve solonoid, no easy way to
see if it is working properly or not until it fails or not, I have removed
the in tank main fuel filter and reset the speedo counter every time I fill
    up.
Yep, comfortable on a long run, nippy enough to throw around in town, down
side pillion seat is crap and struggles a bit two up.
Oil change every 8K miles, oil cost less than a can of chain oil:)

Its an easy bike to work on, I do almost all my own maintenance, parts are
easy to obtain and fairly cheap.

Engine and gearbox are bulletproof as long as basic maintainence is carried
out, its supposedly worth changing piston rings at the 50 - 60k mile mark,
but they should be well into 100k before anything more serious needs doing.

  13. No. The 535's got a proper one which works.

Hell, reading this thread has got me wondering if I shouldn't find a
nice 535 for myself. I really, really like these bikes.

  15. 750 Vulcan. Ugly as a hatful of monkeys' arseholes and as bland as
    distilled water.

And the carburetion never felt right.

  18. Blimey. It's certainly different. Not quite my style, I must say, but
rather well wrought whether you like the style or not.
