I'm having a guitar customised (Gibson Les Paul) and it's going to be a
dark metallic blue. The blue Yamaha used for the first R1s is a really
good colour - anyone have the pantone reference for it?

Would love a bash on one of them, pity they're so expensive. Are the
Epiphone copies for a few hundred any good when compared to the real
deal? (In terms of sound and how they play/feel)
    no idea...

Epiphone is Gibson's "budget" label, in the same way that Fender have
the Squier brand for cheaper versions of their guitars, except that
Epiphones are *way* better quality generally than Squiers. It won't
be as well-finished, or use the same quality materials, but it won't
be a million miles off. I say go for it.

JohnH scribbled on the back of a napkin:
The Epiphones actually aren't bad (I tried both Gibsons and Epiphones
when I was looking for a guitar last year) and play *almost* the same
as a Gibson if they're carefully set up.

Main differences are the woods used (if you lift it up and you feel
like you'll be breaking your back any second, it's a Gibson) and the
quality of the hardware used - tuners and pickups are the most obvious.

If I hadn't found a guitar that was perfect for me and within budget
(PRS EG-4) I would have been very tempted to either get an Epiphone Les
Paul or a Tokai LP copy.

Then stick some Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickups on and play it
through a valve amp. Gives you a sound that makes you grow a beard and
talk like you're from Texas, son.

I recorded this on a Boss BR-864 - superb bit of kit for the dough (£249).
It's got 8 tracks, FX, amp moddeling & drums to boot.
