Yamaha Ownership Lesson 1

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Mr. Fantastic, Sep 8, 2006.

  1. Apparently on modern Yammies the oil light below the speedo indicates
    oil level, not pressure.

So if, for example, you're off to Scotland for a few days and the light
flickers on intermittently, assuming there's plenty of oil in chances
are that it's just a knackered sensor, and there's no need to turn back
and cancel the trip because of it.

    ****.

R1 oil lights come on well before they're supposed to
you have easily 800 miles before you need to top up :)

They've done that for years, not just odern ones. My Diversion had that,
    as did the FJ.

A mate's '03 R1 does it and he got the standard "they all do that Sir"
    response from the dealer.

Even if the sensor is OK you'll get false warnings
    a) when the oil and engine is cold (oil will hide rather than drain back
    into the sump).
    b) riding up steep hills (if the R1 has the typical front of engine sensor
    position).
    c) accelerating (same as above).

The dry sump Yamahas don't have this problem because they have no
oil warning light at all. Nice and simple.

  6. Renaults had an oil level light, too. Maybe they still do.

Fiona's R4 didn't. TBH I'm not sure if it had /any/ warning lights.

My Renault has a bargraph on the multifunction display on startup.
The wife's Toyota flashes a message in Japanese.

My Alfa 75 has both pressure and level sensors. Strangely, both are
still fully functional. Pressure is a gauge and light on the dash. Level
is an LED in the 'Alfa Control' panel.

Did I ever relate the oil level checking procedure for the 'Tart'?
If ever a bike needed an oil level sensor this is it.

The Cheerful Czech startles you somewhat with a loud 'ping' as well as
putting on a warning light if it needs much more than about 500 ml.

My Guzzi Quota has eaten at least four oil pressure switches. the
latest one is dead. I currently work on the theory that by the time I
notice that the bulb has lit, I'll have heard the bad news anyway.

    Pip Luscher says...
My Bandit has an oil light bulb that would work, but it's **** all use
cos there's no switch. In its place is a M10x1.5 bolt that's been
bitched into what's left of the pressure switch hole to keep a modicum
of oil pressure. I go along with Pip's theory that the engine's fucked
by the time it comes on anyway.

Got a Bandit? - get good crash bars.

  14. Come off it. Even if I did look through the manual unless I read it
cover to cover there's every chance such a subtlety would have been
    missed anyway.
    Thanks for playing.

  18. That's my take on it. I mean, I'd rather have a level light that says;
"Oi, dimwit, you haven't checked the oil for ages and it's time you
topped it up" than a light that says: "That's it, no oil pressure, this
is gonna cost you now - BANG!"

That's when scruffy old black Givi boxes are handy. Just stop bike and
stand it next to a wall. Put a hand on the saddle to steady the bike while
    checking sight glass.
