  1. Jesus. I don't know whether to be pleased, or worried, that I spotted
    it.

Quite. My lawn looks dead in comparison.

You don't think my sister cuts the grass do you? She has a neighbour
whose garden isn't big enough to kep him happy come in to do it for
her... using my lawnmower. He also looks after the borders.

It's not the cutting of the grass that's my problem (I think). I can
manage that just fine, but afterwards it's just a bit patch of brown dead-
looking grass. Then it gets green as it sprouts up in time for cutting
    again.

I guess I need to feed it with something, if I can be arsed.

You're cutting it too short, is all. In hot weather you should really
have the mower on the highest possible setting, with the intention
being more to cut down the weeds than the grass itself.

Either that or you're leaving it far too long between cutting, like
months or more, in which case there won't be any green left at the
    ground level.

Could be that. I've been using the lowest setting possible.
Generally I do it every 2 weeks, which is enough of a chore as it is.

Mind, the first rain in weeks came on Sunday and there are clusters of
    growth all over the place.

    You've had rain? Lucky.

I'm getting fed up of watering stuff, no rain forecast by anybody
    either.

Look at a cricket pitch to see the difference. On a good ground the
outfield will be cut to around the 'high' setting on a domestic mower,
and will remain nice and green. The square will be cut to around the
'low' setting, and despite regular watering will become brown over a
prolonged hot dry spell in the season. The pitch itself will be cut
well below what a normal domestic mower would be able to achieve (on a
normal domestic lawn) and will need to be reseeded after just a few
    days' use.
Have you tried using a sprinkler?

And waste water on a plot of grass? Are you mad?

Huh? Oh, don't tell me, the UK's already in the grip of hosepipe bans
    and drought warnings, is it?

Not at all, but as I pay for water, I'm not going to waste it on the lawn
when I just need to wait for a short period of time for it to rain. At
least, that's worked in previous summers.

Yes. Ironically, the only area to declare a hosepipe ban is the Lake
District, scene of floods a few months ago.

"It is not a decision we have taken lightly, but a hosepipe can use as
much water in an hour as a family of four would use in one day."

Who the hell runs a hosepipe at full blat for an hour?

Well quite a bit longer than an hour. Only when I'm changing the water
    in the pond though.
