  1. Anyone here own one, or ever owned one?

    Usual reason.

My brother had one in the very late 80. It was a total revelation in terms
of engine response and power delivery to the CB750/Z1000/GS1000s I'd been
used to. Certainly the fastest thing I'd ridden to that point.
Utterly bonkers bike for the time. He did however have a disc which decided
to crack (at <2500mile iirc) and have both the caliper right off the
forkleg, and him off into the bushes. Warranty repair + helmet/kit replaced
    FOC.
Handling too was stunning after the older twinshock dinosaurs I rode then.
    Seat was like a plank.

We used to use the short stroke motors in an Ireson F2 outfit.

Very strong apart from this one time at Snett when ....

And that was a nicely balanced motor, tuned for reliability rather
than anything else - de facto gorilla rods etc fitted.

    Heh!

When I bought my 1000EXUP my neighbour's son bought the 600. These would be
the first models. He was a harsh and careless owner and the FZR just sucked
it up and continued to go like an angry hornet. The quality of plastics
wasn't great, they were a bit brittle back then. The OE shocks were garbage.
The lube points like suspension linkages and the calipers needed careful
    attention. Otherwise grrrreat.

It was something of a disappointment that the beam frames were steel.

Yep. 1990 or early 1991 model IIRC - the old twin-headlight model but
with the later brakes, in black and charcoal.

Very confidence-inspiring; just fun to ride. It kind of seduced me
into riding sports bike properly and not riding like a commuter,
unlike a CBR600 I'd owned a few years previously. It gave me my first
knee down and unfortunately my first real highside too, at Silverstone
(I had almost highsided a 250LC at Snetterton but somehow stayed on).

  11. I rode one in Vegas in 2008. Great all around bike but not particularly
    inspiring.

No, but it appears I part-own an FZR400 as of 2 minutes ago. Been sat
in a garage unused for 8 years, but it was free so I ain't complaining.
    Are they any good?

Indeed they are. Grey import or official UK bike?

No idea yet. All I know is it's F reg, & was used regularly by the
owner (one of L's friends) until she got pregnant 8 years ago, & she
hasn't touched it since. It'll be a few weeks before I get to see it.

Cool, think I'll do a little happy dance then. It'll live here as a
spare for L when she comes over in the car, so I'll get to play on it
    lots.

That's ok, it's a joy working on things in the new garage, & I get my
jungle sorted out in exchange. I can't think of any spannering job I'd
hate more than gardening, so it's all good.

Which did not apply to FZR1000-Thunderace. Difference AFAIR were the
'ace was the FZR1000 engine (with 20 valves) fitted in a YZF750 frame.
It was a nice try for the R1.

I had one years ago. Great bike for a first-timer. Mine was the RRSP
(single seat, close ratio gearbox) version from '87.

I believe the FZR400 was basically a sleeved down FZR600, so it's not
as bad as a CBR400 or RVF400 to work one. And fit my 6 foot 3 frame
quite happily. Physically larger than my current GSXR.
