I'm OK for a bag thanks John, I was just thinking of getting a rack a
little more professional-looking than my rust-reo-and-hose-clamps
    effort of last year!

Maan; that'd double the bike's value in one hit!!
Naah; I should find one at a wreckers for not too much (and I've
actually got a brand-new Triumph Thunderbird Ventura-rack at home that
I could chop and weld into something workable with a little effort!)

The days where it's worth having brand loyalty to one of a group of
mostly interchangable japanese manufacturers are long gone.

Triumph are reaching that point as well.

They are increasingly makers of money first and makers of motorcycles 2nd.

The original owner of my current bike had bought 31 new Suzukis at the
same dealer over the past 25 years. He's their second best customer.
Their best customer was on his 43rd Suzuki as of the end of last year.
Honda is a car manufacturer, Yamaha makes musical instruments, Kawasaki
builds airplanes, trains and ships & Suzuki keep inventing new kinds of
ugly. Its naive to think that making money would not be their primary
objective, none of them are run as not for profits (well, not
    intentionally).

Whilst all of them are in the business of making money (as one would
expect them to be) some manufacturers regard the product as being
primary and that as a result of making an individual and different
product the money will follow basically automatically.

Increasingly none of the Japan based bike manufacturers take that
approach (these days at least), although in the past they did so to a
    much greater extent.

There are still individual examples, the MT01, the rune and a few
others... but increasingly not their mainstream models.

I would suggest that Ducati and BMW do take that approach (as do say
Apple for a non bike related example).

I expect the big 4 are right and it doesn't so follow.

Didn't work for Guzzi after all :)

BMW is a niche product and have big backing elsewhere. Ducati were
floundering for quite a while until they got superbikes sorted for
    their style of bike...

But innovation isn't either company's hallmark. They've been doing
the same thing time out of mind.

The big 4 try it now and then and succeed. Honda with the 'wing and
    the VFR750s for example.

But mostly they know the real money is in the things many people buy.
Small utility bikes in Asia and dream/toys in USA (and therefore other
Western countries that get what the USA gets), plus a few entry level
whatsits to try and lure new riders.

Me, I wanna see what the demographic hump does to bikes in the next
10-20 years. Everyone's been riding on the Baby Boomers who started
buying bikes in the 60s and have been driving it since then. When
the 50 somethings buying expensive midlife crisis toys stop, even
if the next generation have the same habits there just aren't as
    many of them.

Very true. And you're right to suspect they won't have the same habits
    either - why would they?

In 20 years it is possible that no-one will be permitted to ride a
motorcycle. At least in Europe or Australia.

So, I guess, savour it while you can. Even Guzzi's can get legislated off
    the roads.

I think trying to guess what habits or attitudes will be in a couple of
decades time is a risky passtime.

Isn't there something in the code about driving a tractor on the road
    needing special permissions ?

The people who had "big-end" in the poll are now looking good for a win.
Final weights will be declared after the oil is drained and the filter
    cut-open on Monday.......

The noise first happened shortly after I had a prolonged venture into the
rev-limiter-zone when I forgot to change up overtaking a line of cars but
the genesis was most likely when the crankcases filled up with rain-water
after I moved the un-tappet-covered bike from under the roofed-pergola to
the unroofed-pergola to make room for gNatalie's rain-lashed 21st last year
(and subsequently left it there for a few days before I discovered what a
    fuckhead I'd been!)
Sometimes I can still surprise myself with just how stupid I'm capable of
    being.....

I think with the exception of mobility scooters and some electric
bicycles you need permission to drive anything on the road.

  20. You obviously realise that an opening line like that will not go
    unrewarded, don't you?

btw: commiserations on the big-end. You and things mechanical are not
really having a great relationship lately.
