XX + Staintunes: first impressions

    Hey all,

I've now had the new pipes on the beast for a day and a half and to say I'm
impressed with them is an understatement. Here are my first thoughts:

    - sound = driver awareness: leaving MAW yesterday with new pipes (sans those
silly baffle thingos) I noted that a number of drivers looked for me as I
approached from behind (no gay Honda riding jokes please Alx). Coming from
the Duc to this bike it was very obvious that I was far less 'visible' in
traffic and have had many near mergers into me (c'mon Alx). Perhaps my
perceptions were wrong but certainly I feel far more noticeable in traffic
in the few hundred kays I've done since yesterday.

    - increase in power/torque: I was told to expect a fairly uniform increase
across the rev range of about 8hp and certainly I can notice a difference.
There are some fairly steep short streets in my area and it seems to climb
them with a little less bother than before, esp. in the lower rev ranges.
Of course I haven't been to a track so haven't tested the higher ranges
(officer) but there is certainly something going on there, and I like it!
Mcarrs Ck road was fantastic last night. hehe. Actually, for some reason
it seems more tractable than before - strange that.

    - bigger smile under the helmet: yes, it's not quite the Desmo sound but
it's great at last to finally hear deep throaty engine sounds again. Now my
neighbours can share in my joys and everyone else on the road - especially
convertibles in the tunnels. At about 100 and above, cruising revs (~ 4,000
rpm) the pipes are outdone by the air on my helmet but strike it up a notch
or two and it's certainly audible where once before it almost wasn't.

    - shiny = sexy: it's been said many times, the XX isn't really a sexy bike
but these nice shiny oval things add something aesthetic IMHO. So much so
that I had to wash the bastard yesterday, so it's now no longer a Brownbird.

I haven't tried Yoshis or others and decided to go for these mainly because
    a. they comply out of the box, b. you can very easily 'uncomply'/comply them
with one Allen key and c. the Staintune mob seem pretty cool and I like to
support the locals. Also I didn't want big racy signs on what really isn't
    a racing bike.

So overall am I happy with my purchase decision? You betchya. At this
point I'd have to say I have an even greater desire to ride the thing than
before. Perhaps I'll give a quick report one day if I ever try it with the
    baffles... :)

    Cheers,
    Dave E

Well yesterday I got a bit excited - new pipes and a washed bike... had to
throw the camera on board and head to the local park (Lane Cove River Park)
    and blaze away.

Here are some shots of my little baby...

  3. Maaaaate!!!

Nice work! It's amazing how nicely they dress up the back of the bike!
I have never liked the standard cans on the 'bird, but honestly didn't
think that a pair of nice ones would make such a difference. I guess
the lesson here is that you should never underestimate the difference
that a pair of nice ones will make.

I'm missing the sound of the 'tunes on the VTR - the Sprint's a nice
bike, but it's just too damn quiet and buzzy, and I'm too stingy to
cough up for the official Triumph race can. I am, however, enjoying the
ability to ride without needing to worry about being defected for noise
(not that I ever copped one with the 'Storm - a mystery to this day) -
    maybe I'm just getting old...

Anyhow, good work! And keep away from the bloody garage at night - the
neighbours might not mind the noise that the bike makes, but they sure
as heck don't want to hear you adding your "2 cent's worth", so to
    speak.

    Thanks!
    Matto :)
05 Sprint ST - quiet as a mouse! (for now)

Yes, I learned this (and little else) in my early days at uni. Cans can
take many forms, they can be cold and cooling after a long train ride to the
uni and contain liquid to get you through the day, and then cans can be warm
and soft in the evening, to get you through the night. The former was
almost never restricted to a pair, but the latter certainly was.
Yes, I carry those baffles with me, just in case. Next week I might just
have to get an allen key as well. The good thing with Staintunes (other
than being lickable...) is that they comply straight out of the box - so
check them out for the Sprint. Go on, you know you want to... :)
    Gees... um... eeeekkk! :)
    Cheers Mate,

Mate, from that position I could have licked the entire bike. :)

There are those who would suggest he'd have no need to

Hmmm... maybe I'll have to resurrect that 1 man, X woman tent of mine...

I'm sure you'll love this story, but as a kid I was forced into playing the
trumpet. Played the shit out of one for over 10 years. Little did I know
what physiological by-product such endurance hard core tonguing action would
produce. Maybe I'll have to go back to uni next year... ;-)

    AAGH nasty

Mate, I really love my bike. Those damned pipes, well, despite being about
700 degrees at the time, just too sexy. :)

You know the gig. I take a thousand photos, but I .... one motorbike.

It's been a while mate - cut me some slack ya bastard. lol

    Cheers,
    Dave E
