    Hi y'all,
Quick question.... a guy I know has acquired a 89 XV1000. He already has a
CBR600 so he has asked me to keep the XV (ride it, store it, etc) for him.
I did a quick google search but can't find much info on this model except
that it looks a bit like a chopper/cruiser. Any info or links to info would
    be appreciated.
Anyone give me a '20word' run down on what it is please?
    Thanks...

Bikepics is always (usually) good for pictures of pretty
    much anything: http://www.bikepics.com/yamaha/xv1000/

That bikepics only has a very small number (<20) pics
tends to support whassisname's suggestion that they're
a bit rare. 100s of pics is the norm.

20 words? I only need six:

    "It's a cruiser - run screaming"

Yep but the original TR1 (non-chopper) XV1000 was a chainy.

More unsightly than a bare chain flapping around, leaking noxious
slime all over the rear of the bike?

  11. My mate's been meaning to do that when he replaces the chain... but it's
    been years.

And the chain is probably as good as new.

An enclosed chaincase with an O-ring chain should last as long as a
    shaft! No dirt, no wear.

    In my humble opinion.

But they did outlast non-enclosed chains quite
    substantially.
An O-ring chain could be retro-fitted - as long as there is enough side
    clearances.

I've got a friend with an XV750 with an enclosed chaincase. It's got a
removable bung to check chain adjustment; surely they can be oiled
though there rather than removing the case?
I assume the XV1000 would be the same?

  15. Don't worry about the oil. Just grease 'em up when first fitted and get a
dirty finger when you poke it in the hole every 20k to check for sloppiness!
