I have also posted this to the trailriding group - but it (the group) does
    not seem much attended.

My new XT600E is now run in (1250 miles) and I'd like to buy it a new
exhaust. I think the original might be stifling it a bit.

    If anyone has experience of changing the exhaust system please let me know;
what make and whether it made any difference to the bike.

I imagine that in time the steel pipes and box will rust through and I'll
end up with a stainless system anyway - it might as well be now as later.

    Thanks

    John

  5. I'd be very surprised if you can find another 14bhp on a bloody single
just from an exhaust and intake change.

Or someone's got a dodgy dyno.

Orange Boulevard Racing used to get 60HP out of their XT motors using
the Cosworth piston and White Power cam.

IIRC Yamaha claimed 43HP for the XT600 anyway, so maybe your air filter
was a bit fouled up before you ditched it?

  8. I think figures like that are achievable - IIRC Tony Huck used to get
mid-50s out of an XT and the engine rideable for the street.

Just that tyou need rather more than a carb and can change for another
    14bhp....

Laser Pro-Duro is the way to go. You
Or the air filter was so stuffed it was strangling what should have been
    a 43HP engine down to 35...

I thought I heard a late popper earlier on, you know. It turned out
    to be Loz's brain exploding.

    OH- Guest

Loss of more than 15 % ? Quite a lot, I'd say. Probably the one
Yamaha got the 42 hp out of was for some reason one of the
few where all tolerances were a their best, every casting came
out nice and smooth and every alignment during assembly was
perfect. Just a coincidence of course. Not really cheating and
they would be daft if they put the worst they could find in the
    test stand.

But why do we discuss this at all, let's face it, the XT600 is a
    slow lump for old farts.

Never tried one. Was it actually an improvement over the old 500?

  17. Huge. More poke, while just as soft and torquey low down, smoother, and
    (allegedly) much more reliable.

As for the bike - well, all the improvements of 10-15 years plus a disc
brake front end instead of an SLS front drum.

So it's like a sanitised version then? OK, I suppose, but if it's lost
    the rawness of the original...

What's the top speed, BTW? The old XT500 could only just top 90 on a
good day (as measured by HM Police) - I always felt it could have
    coped with 10-15mph more.

  19. A 600E will *just* hit a ton in perfect conditions. Otherwise 95-ish.
It's a little bit quicker than the 500, but not much.

Decent brakes and suspesnion are the main benefit, but even I admit that
it doesn't look as good as the 500.

Especially the late 500 with alloy tank and gold wheel rtims... yummy.
