Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of an appropriate
oil cooler for my XS650SE, just bought the bike and see that it had
one fitted at some point in the past - the plumbing is all in place,
just been looped back on itself....

Halco Tuning used to sell (new parts) the oil cooler off an XJ650 or 900 for
the moderately tuned XS650s (up to 840cc). The larger and more highly tuned
variants (950/990/1050/1153cc) were often fitted with automotive oil coolers
    (Lockhart etc).

    Bad form and all that.
But I've just found in the garage a brand new oil cooler I bought years ago
for my 1153cc loony Halco/Hagon hybrid XS650 but never fitted. I must
_really_ have had money to burn back then, BC (Before Children).
    <looks at receipt dated 1987 for £177!>

Thanks for the info - £177 is a bit more than I want to spend on one,
if it was that price then goodness knows how much you'd buy the same
for now.... have to start trawling the breakers yard I think.

This cooler is a bit special though. A piece of TIG welded art, and it's
    definitely not for sale.
A standard cooler off XJ650/750/900 will do you fine from a breakers.
I wonder what other Halco Tuning bits are lurking inside your engine?

I didn't get to much paperwork with the bike - there was an old Halco
worksheet with it, they fitted progressive springs in the forks,
electronic ignition, exhausts and carb setup, a new headlight and oil
    cooler with associated pipework.
I had a couple of these bikes back in the 70's, not the fastest nor
sweetest handling machines even then - but it's one motorcycle out of
many I owned in my youth that made me feel I'd like one again - it's
great, grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat every time I climb
    off the thing.
Do you still have your XS?

Sadly no. I've owned/built/rebuilt/sold 14 of these over about 12 years.
They are now too bloody overpriced as the 'classic boys' have discovered
    them.
I used to do quite a bit of businees with Tony Hall when he was based in
Horndean (walking distance from the Gales Brewery!).
I have built many, many Halco based motors for XS650 projects. My 1153cc
loony hybrid 'Don Vesco' FlatTracker-stylee machine was the ultimate in my
book. Cost me an arm&leg but was worth it in the end. I only wish I could
    buy it back.

Maybe you could tell me if the oil pump cover (where the small plastic
filter is housed) is supposed to be removable with the cooler
conversion fitted - I took both screws out and without using brute
force couldn't shift it? If it's just a question of a gummy gasket
then I'll give it a tap with a rubber mallet - but would hate to find
    that this wasn't the case!
The flat tracker style works well with this bike - maybe if I can find
    a basket case......

    Cheers

The Halco oil cooler take off coversion is only a couple of tubes tapped
into the clutch cover casting by the front oil gallery.
The cover has a secondary oil filter inside it so it is indeed removeable.
The really importtant filter is in the sump (front plate). This often has
tears or holes in the brass gauze so check it carefully.
These engines are bulletproof but the sure way to kill them is to neglect
oil quality and regular changes. Semi synth Millers 20/50 every 2-3k miles.

....when you say they're tapped into the clutch cover - is that what
you mean - the feed and return (or one or the other) on mine come out
of the secondary oil filter cover.

If they come out of the small 'circular' cover itself, it's not a Halco job.
    Got any photos?

I'm at work at the moment - I work on a ship, and probably won't be
home till the end of next month. Looking at one of the pics I have of
the bike I can see that it's one of the pipes which come out of the
filter cover - the other is tapped into the clutch casing.
