When I was adjusting the valves on my son's 2001 xr250, I noticed
several ounces of oil come out of crankcase cover when I removed plug
to turn crankshaft to TDC. Is there supposed to be oil in this area or
is there a seal on left side of crankshaft to prevent oil from getting
    into the alternator area?
    Thanks

    David,
That alternator runs in oil as do the alternators on many 4-stroke
bikes. There are no seals on either side of the crank on this one. It
may have been slightly overfilled if the oil level is at the crankshaft
    centerline as your post indicates.
