Fucking bag of shite. It managed to screw my internet
connection *again* having had it installed and running
fine for 3 weeks after the last uninstallation because
it randomly screwed my internet connection.

Christ knows what it was doing. The SP2'ed machine
wasn't even showing up on the router with the Windows
Firewall turned off, so it was obviously blocking
    *something*.

    Oh well, roll on SP2a...

Heh.. looks in headers. So how come you're using a PC and giving advice
on Macs? OSX is very, very good, can't vouch for OS9 though.

    If it helps ...

I've installed SP2 on about 150 PC's (varying makes and models) so far
and not had problems with any of them ;o)

Steve Parry secured a place in history by writing:
I've installed it on three and had problems on all of them. And at work
I'm co-ordinating the testing against our COE image and certain apps deemed
essential by whatever criteria. So far we think it's unlikely we can roll
it out this quarter, and we haven't done all the testing yet.

Because i have to look after the best part of 200 PC's and 150 mac's
in my job, and as for OSX, if it was not for the ability to reset the
file permissions it would be as bad as OS9.

I've had it installed here at home on my NTL Broadband
connection (with VPN link to work) since before it became
publicly available and have had no problems at all. Also on my
    work PC ditto. YMODV

  11. I've had tremendous problems with XP and video editing software. And it
    seems I'm not alone.

XP and video capture and editing don't mix.

  12. Not got any problems with it here (XP SP2 AMD XP3200+ 2 gig RAM). What
    software are you using?

So you prefer XP PCs to Mac OSX computers then? Or do you have equal
    disdain for both?

Some of us aren't spazy and have problems with networking on Linux at all.

That's what I'm saying - if the *nixisti can't do it, what chance have
    us mere mortals!

  17. XP SP1 AMD XP2600 + 1.25 gig RAM

1/ Pinnacle Studio 9 AV/DV with their own interface card, worked OK
    with 98SE. [1]

2/ My Tevion TV Video card and the software that came with it also now
has major problems, worked on 98SE.

Talking to a couple of locals who do video editing and one who builds
PCs to order, this is common with XP and SP2 makes things worse unless
you turn off nearly all the extras that comes with it. So I've not
    loaded SP2.

[1] I now know it is reported to be a heap of sh*t but it didn't crash
    98SE.

  18. *Waves Mandrake 10.1*

First distro I have ever had that installed pefectly on my laptop. Did
the wireless networking, the power management, video, sound and everything
    automatically and OK.

It's still not there yet as a user-replacement for Windows, but it's
    definately well on the way.

  19. I'm sorry - I don't see a solution. All I see is Solaris. Which
(compared to most Linux distros) sucks badly as a desktop OS. It even
sucks badly as a server OS *except* as a NIS master/automounter.[1]

I know - I used to have to look after them.

    Phil.

[1] Except also when compared with HP-UX or the other proprietory
    unices.
