Check fuse box in garage: "lights2" fuse gone.

Get new 5A fuse from drawer: it's too long!

The glass bodied one is a good 4mm shorter than the "conventional" one
I took from the drawer in the kitchen.

Whose silly fucking idea was that, then?

Obviously built by the same people who did our place in Milton Keynes.

Pip was helping put a mains extension into the garage, wired it up wrong
and pop went the fuse.

Spent the next hour and a half trying to find somewhere that had a
replacement in stock.... learned a lesson with that one and bought in
bulk.

trying to put a 12V DC automotive fuse in your 230v AC consumer unit, are

No, I took the glass one *out* of the fuse box. I tried to fit a
standard 5A plug fuse in its place, but it won't fit.

wrap it round the contacts

I'd have serious words with the builders then. Fuses, ffs; breakers were
being fitted on most things 2 decades ago.
Corner-cutting bastards were probably using up old stock bought at a
surplus sale for half nothing.
