The boy turns 16 in November and has, having been out a few times on the
back of the various bikes I've had recently, come round to the idea of
having a moped to get about on.

Anyone got anything kicking about they'd swap for some beer tokens?

Not too fussed what condition its in, although something that comes in
several boxes is probably a bit beyond us, but I wouldn't mind getting
something shed like but servicable we can recondition in time for his
birthday - if anything, I reckon this is better than buying something half
decent and just handing it to him, as I'm hoping he'll respect whatever it
is more if he's had to put a few hours into it to get it ready for the road.

Anyway... anything considered - geared or otherwise, so long as it's sub
    £500.

    TIA

Throw a few more quid into the pot and some hard bargaining and you could
have a new chinese scoot or moped.
OTOH you might be able to pick up a Fizzie thats not too badly abused.

    typed
Please explain why you would want to pay over the odds for a moped that
is at least 28 years old.

Otherwise I might think you're talking out of your arse.

    Again.

Please explain how you carry forward a price reference into a new paragraph
despite the fact that it clearly starts with OTOH.

Time to improve your reading skills YTC.

  5. For a mere £500? No chance.

  6. He is - but he's talking too low a price. Have you seen the prices
they're fetching? Even scrappy runners make £750.

And I have (under a pile of wood) a puch grand prix and a gilera. If I
wasn't so idle I'd have a go at getting them out.

Unfortunately I know they'll be in very sorry states by now.

Heh, I had someone contact me years ago in the Gilera Network days who
had about a dozen 70's Gilera mopeds and 'Trial 50' examples.

    Indeed.

I sold a shed like N plate one for £450... hummm... must be at least five
years ago now, maybe more, and they've gone up since.

Aye, I know... but as mentioned above, I'd rather try and find something we
actually need to fettle for the road in order to hopefully instil a sense of
    respect for it in him.
    No thanks.

I had one of these when I was 16 and it was an unreliable POS.

Indeed... and one I'm fully qualified to rebuke given I had one at the same
    age as my son.

I'm hoping he'll gain a keen interest in bikes... not be put off for life.

    <proud boast>

I was part of the school karting team that won the '50cc Fixed Gear' class
in the national championship, with a Puch Grand Prix powered kart in...
    humm... 1988, IIRC.
Probably worth a bit now as well, even as basket cases.

Might be worth putting them on the bay of E if you can be arsed.

  13. Still worth having. If the Puch is the black & gold S model with the
disc brake, definitely. The Gilera 50 Touring and Trail are also
    sought-after.

Even shabby rusty non-running things are fetching £400 if complete.

Don't underestimate said influence on the classic car or bike market.

    Now that is good news.
    Probably true.

These things use the same AM6 Minarelli engine that Aprilia RS50s and
Yamaha TZR50s, amongst others, have. Parts for the engine are available
anywhere and very cheaply. Barrel kits are 65 quid with cyl head,
    gaskests and piston etc.

The rest of the bike is typical Italian/French/Spanish built shite, but
they can be reliable if not tuned.

    *perk*

Prices man... we need prices. ;-)

I've got cause to visit the frozen north at some stage this week to pick up
another VFR800 (1), and could take a van instead of the train.

The email addy is unmunged if you want to discuss further / send pics.

And there was me labouring under the impression the TZR50 might actually be
    Yamaha powered.
That won't be happening for a while if I have my way - if he's going to
learn the hard way about why lobbing a bike isn't a good thing, I'd rather
it was at 35mph or below.
