WTB: Trailer (Melbourne)

    G'day all,

Am moving from Melbourne to Brisbane in November of this year and want to
take my bike with me, so I'm looking for a second-hand trailer that can
carry a 600cc sportsbike (happy for it to carry two) and that has a floor.
I've been looking in the trading post but nothing has jumped out at me -
they all seem to be either for 3 dirt bikes (flimsy, narrow rails and no
    floor) or ridiculously expensive.

It would be nice if I could also use the thing for track days, which is why
I'd like the floor - I want to be able to take jerry cans of fuel, first-aid
kit etc with me without cramming the car too full of stuff - and if the bike
is in pieces at the end of the day I want to be able to put the pieces on
the trailer floor so I don't have to worry about having bits and pieces fall
off on the way home :)

Does anyone have one lying around that they don't use any more and would be
    willing to part with?

If I can't get a purpose-built motorcycle trailer, how safe would it be to
transport my bike in a normal one? It would still need to have tie-down
points but most normal trailers have rails you can use for that anyway - I'd
be more concerned with the tyres slowly slipping sideways and having the
bike fall over that way? Has anyone tried this? Can you get wheel chocks or
anything that will prevent this sort of problem?

    Regards,
    Andrew

Nominating your price range would be helpful.
You can get a piece of channel and bolt it to the floor with a couple
of bolts, then you can take it out when you want to use it as a
normal trailer. I used to do that for the kids trailies. You will find
most road bikes require more than your standard 6'. You're going to
    need a 7' box trailer.

I use a couple of exhaust U Bolts to hold the front wheel
You have to measure the width of the wheel though.
An eye bolt in each corner of the trailer for an anchor point. 1 in the
    middle for two bikes
    7 x 5 trailer is good for 2 bikes.

G'day! Apologies for taking so long to respond - my laptop had the smoke let
    out :(

I'd be looking at around the $300-$400 mark. It doesn't need to be in
perfect nick but I'd like to be able to at least make the Brisbane trip
before having to do any work on it :)
Sounds reasonable - I'll keep an eye out for a standard 7'x4' or 7'x5' and
see if I can find anything. Thanks for the advice :)

    Regards,

  5. Try and get yourself a 7 foot long trailer with a checker plate floor, the
checker plate is thick enough to take some load, the normal thin floor makes
it hard to mount tie down points.

I've never seen a box in it yet.

I use the U - Bolts in the front section of the trailer ( the vertical bit )
so there is no stress whatsover on them - they only keep the front wheel
    straight.

With some box trailers - the tube section on the top inner rail can catch
the front tyre where pressure is put on it - You only have to get the tyre
to catch once & you can have a problem - Round the section out with a hammer
    :) - so it doesn't happen

The 1/2" Eye Bolts are the anchor points - Use big washers to spread the
load a bit on the floor.

If you use this method - Measure out the centre of the trailer. & divide
    each side equally.
As Someone else pointed out - the chequer plate floor trailers are best.

    7 x 4 = 1 SportsBike
7 x 5 = 2 Sportsbikes - You really have to measure properly to fit them in.
    7 x 4 = 1 Cruiser - Diagnally
    7 x 5 = 1 Cruiser - Diagnally
    8 x 4 = 1 Cruiser straight
    8 x 5 = 2 cruisers straight
