the problem with going from a sportsbike to one of those is that
you're constantly aware of how heavy and slow they are.

I Agree. In an ideal world I'd have both... one day.

Alternatively go for something with loadsa grunt but no fairing (Zthou,
Tuono, or retro) and you won't feel short changed on the power but will
be more aware of the speeds you're doing. Ideal compromise I reckon.

Heh - fair enough - I'm still _somewhat_ tempted with a R1100S as a next
    bike. Vaguely sporty, comfy, different.
But the Boxer Cup replica ("the only one that doesn't look gay" according to
    my SO) is £8500. :-O

Which is a brand new GSX-R750 and a set of spare bodywork ;-)

Aren't there more reasons to consider a bike then just grunt and wind
    protection?

Like the 6000 mile service interval, like the heated grips, like the very
good comments about the suspension for "normal" roads, like the idea of a
comfortable bike that can do long distances.

For the commute Wik does, I would think the GS with ABS is nigh on perfect
    :)

<goes back to trying to get the BMW website to make a mistake and lop £4k
    off it's prices>

It's quite a capable motorcycle, too. I test rode one before getting the
-12R but just didn't get on with it, it just wasn't engaging enough.
Nothing at all wrong with it; it went, it stopped, it went around corners,
it just didn't ring my bell.

Having said such, you need considerably more than an hour test ride,
really. The engine, whilst in a higher state of tune than the GS, ain't
going to exactly set the world alight.

Dunno. Try one; you might like it.
That /is/ a major stumbling block for most, too. However, unlike most,
the resale value is always a major feature.

I think the service interval thing is a red herring - the "savings"
are more than offset by the cost of the bloody bikes in the first
    place.
    they're dog slow, though.

Loads, which was why I was commenting on sportsbikes not being the only
way to have fun and power, not critisising the BMW. IYSWIM.
Indeed, it's a shame the market has become so polarised that fewer bikes
seem to offer this all round capability.
Remember if you're keeping a bike indefinately then depreciation isn't
really an issue. I used that excuse to justify buying the ZRX new and
    don't regret it.

What colour are you getting?)

Spot on, matey. That and the fact that the -12R was a fucking money pit.
Heh, good luck. Worth bearing in mind that the Adventure isn't going to
get any sort of facelift next year other than to get some of the stuff wot is
currently optional included in the standard spec ("white" indicator
lenses, 30litre tank, etc.) included in the base price.

As such, the dealers are discounting the stuff they've already got a fair
    bit [1]

[1] That's "a fair bit" by BMW standards.

I doubt I'll ever regret buying the CD200. Well, financially, at least.

I don't really know. My bike came with Bridgestone Trailwings (OK in the dry
but crap in the wet), which I changed to Tourances at about 10K. I've only
done 13K on it so far.

  19. Hmm - yep I think I can see you on one of those. Pulling a wheelie off
the throttle while going through Stoke Newington.

that would be the vague idea. Speaking of Stokey - any idea WTF was
wrong with the traffic between Newington Green and Seven Sisters?

    Almost totally logjammed.
