I've got a Kawasaki ZX-6R-G ('98-'99) engine of indeterminate condition
on a bench in the garage. It's missing the starter motor, the generator
(both the rotor/flywheel), and the timing sensor wheel.

Only prob, from your perspective, it's in Canberra.

    (thinks)
    (cue unintelligible mealy-mouthed sound)

To tell you the truth, I really have no idea... last motor I saw bought
from a wrecker was a Bandit 1200 unit and that went for, ummm, $2500, I
think. On the same day, a carbed ZX-636 motor went for, again, I think,
four grand and a bit, which I thought was a bit rude.

Big got an exchange donk for the Spada for, ermmm, $850, wunnit?

I sold the one out of my R1, complete with fist-sized hole in the bottom
    crankcase, for $750...

....going on that, plus the fact that the only complete four-cylinder
bike engines on Ebay atm are an ex-Japan Busa unit for $2500 and a
seemingly literal boat anchor of a Z1000 one which is up to $232 at last
    update...

I dunno. How's something similar to the $750 I got for the R1 engine sound?
Well, it came with a tub of bits; waterpump, oil cooler, camchain
tensioner, generator, timing, clutch and possibly sprocket covers, some
clean-looking valves, both inlet and exhaust, a similar number of valve
springs of indeterminate condition, plus what's pretty much a full set
of very clearly used big end shells and a couple of pistons with
carbon-blackened crowns. This could mean that they've either got most of
the way through a rebuild, or that they barely started, before going
    "Meh, **** it".

I've had a look under the cam cover, and there's nothing missing there.

Ultimately, if you're going racing with a secondhand engine, you'll want
to pull it down right off the bat as a matter of course, and ZX6's don't
have much of a rep for being hand grenades, anyway.

Big-end shells, pistons and rings aren't that pricy, and the G-model
engine still had steel-sleeved cylinders, so even in the unlikely event
of there being a scored bore, there'd be no NiCaSil replating to pay out
    of your arse for.

If you're still interested, you might've just given me an excuse to tear
it down, check the cylinders, the valve faces, big and little-end
play, the state of the hardening on the gear clusters and dogs. I could
always ship it up to you in bits.
Don't quote me on this precisely, but, having both a 6R and a 9R in the
garage[1], I'd be almost certain they use a common "recent-model Kwaka"
starter motor, so that opens your choice a bit.

[1]And, boy, doesn't that feel good to type. :)

  7. If only someone on this newsgroup was a self-proclaimed expert on '90s
    Japanese 600s.....
Perhaps even someone who piked on the Unaugural...

No, unfortunately... good point. Completely forgot about the missing gen
and starter... subtract about $150 from that asking price.

Not, it is fair to say, in a professional or
    ever-actually-getting-it-working capacity.

A MegaSquirt variant, most likely. I'm still mucking around
    with the throttle body setup.
I'll have a look when I sober up.
