Looking for 2-3 bikes for our new company offices. I'd prefer 1972ish or
    older, but am flexible...

Must be clean, cosmeticly nice or better, but non-running ok as they will be
static displays. Not wanting rotted out junkers that have been sitting
outside in the elements for 30 years. Cosmetics more important that
mechanics. I'm not expecting a Black Shadow for my budget, but
    unsual/unique is good...

Street, dirt, ex-racer, I'm pretty open. Just want to make it intresting
    when folks visit...

I'd like to stay at $1500 or less per bike if possible. Please email
    description and pics to ...

Truck and cash standing by for the right bike(s)...

    Thanks!

    Jeff

Golly gee, thanks! I never would have thought to review my local market
before posting to a wide audience such as USENET.

You know, you're right. I'm sure every bike within a 500-1000+ mile radius
that "might" be for sale and meets my criteria is in this mornings Dallas
    Morning News.

And, in hindsight, I'm confident that there is no way somebody in
KS/MO/OK/LA/IA/NE/NM/AZ or other such places might have just want I'm
looking for and be in the market to sell. Otherwise they'd list it in MY
    local "want ads", right?

Thanks soooo much for the tip! You are an asset to the community!

the problem with expanding the radius on this kind of bike is that
shipping costs will mean you have to cut back on the max sale price of
any offering to stay within your spending limits. that's the reason for
looking nearby to find something (in better shape) you can go pick up.

  5. Well, you could look at the want ads at www.traderonline.com, and tell
it to narrow the results to bikes that are within a certain distance
    of you.

Keep in mind that more people will keep up with the mechanical aspects
of the bike and let the cosmetic aspects slide than vice versa, so you
might have a hard time finding a clean, non-running, good-looking
example of a 33+-year old bike, much less for $1500.

Still, try traderonline and eBay, and have it limit your results to
those bikes that are within an acceptable distance from your ZIP code.

  7. Jeff,

I've got a beautiful 1982 Yamaha 650 Special for sale. Even though it
is a little newer than you had requested, it does represent bikes in
the 1960s to 1970s time frame. Yamaha made this model from 1969 to
1983 as a direct competitor to the classic British bikes. You won't
find a better looking older bike than this. It only has 2100 miles
on it and is in near perfect condition, both cosmetically and
mechanically. I'm asking $2500 for it. I live in the Dallas-Fort
Worth area (North Richland Hills) and I can deliver it. Photos can be
    seen at

If interested, I can be reached at

kewl! i had a 650 Special II from about that time (~79 to 82) that was
"midnight blue". Pipes and everything except for the badging (Heritage)
look the same as I remember them.

  9. My wife and I had a '79 XS650 Special as well. I loved the looks and
sound of that bike, but it's just too physically small for me. (My
wife said that I looked like a Shriner on it). She wanted something
that was better-suited to longer freeway drives, so we sold it when
she got her GS1100 (now replaced by a BMW R1200C).

I still miss that bike. For the $1000 we sold it for, I almost wish I
had kept it as a third bike to tinker with.
