If a vehicle gets written off by an insurance company (ie. a 'statutory
write-off'), can it be repaired and re-registered, or is it only ever usable
    for parts?

Until about a year ago things were a bit more grey-coloured, also adding
shades of grey depending on which state you're in.
Since then things have changed and there's a national act in force now.
A stat. write-off has had it's Vin withdrawn and been put on the national
    register.
It can NOT be re-registered. Parts only or track-use...
IF you can find a replacement frame (the most common reason for a stat
write-off is heavy frame damage), that frame MUST have an AUS VIN number
stamped and plated to it and must have been REGISTERED PREVIOUSLY in AUS,
you might be able to do a frame swap and register the bike again (under the
Vin number of the replacement frame).
In order to do that, you'll have to present the stat. written-off bike AS IS
and with all paperwork as to it's registration history/ receipts/ current
reg. details/ as well as the replacement frame with IT's set of paperwork to
one of the Registration-Authority-approved vehicle engineers (call your
Authority for addresses), who will have a look at the whole thing, then they
can fill out a request form (to change frames) to be sent to the Reg.
    Authorities.
If approved, you may go ahead with the swap.
After the job is done, the bike has to be presented to the engineering guy
again, signed off OK, (pay engineering mob between $200-400) then you have
to present the bike with ALL receipts for parts used in the repair to
another Regist. Authority approved mob for a (here in Vic) VIV-report (cost
    around $300).
That report basically states that NO stolen parts were used in the repair.
Then it's off for a RWC and finally for registration (which can ONLY be done
with ALL those papers in hand).

    cheers

Yeah, I did that with the CX.
Maybe it's changed, but all I had to do was install all the shiny
bits in the new frame, and go register it with the new frame's VIN.
Maybe they've changed it a bit to prevent 'rebirthing'. Maybe they
    just don't care about CX650s!

    SNIP
Yeah, they changed it for exactly that reason.

I don't think you can do that either. Victoria also has the two classes of
write off also (statutory and repairable) and I think the register of
statutory writeoffs is national. Vicroads sent me a copy of all the blurb
after my bike was written off last year.
