I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned before:
    http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/

A target speed of 1000mph, using three engines, one of which is an
800bhp 4.5 litre V12 used as a glorified fuel pump.

    (Oh, and there's a game...)

Errr. Thats a bit like saying watching paint dry is a little bit
    uninteresting.

"Our mission: to confront and overcome the impossible using Science,
Engineering, Technology and Mathematics - motivating the next
generation to deal with global 21st century challenges."

That's a rather long winded way of saying "I want to go faster than
    Americans".

But I'm glad to see Noble is still at it.

Brilliant. I especially like the descriptions of the technical
    challenges and design decisions.

    In fact, **** it...

Noble's got a good track record, I've just joined the supporters' club.

    Go us! :^)

Err, Thrust SSC still holds the LSR. So why bother ? If the Yanks do
break it, I could see a point.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record

Not much point risking a mans life over a (higher) number.

Ah, no we differ there. I think there's always a point to risking
your life to do something that has never been done before and to push
the boundaries of what can be done.

If people didn't, then Everest would never have been climbed and this
picture would never have been taken...

It's the age old answers to stupid questions:

"Why did you want to do that?"

"Because it's there." or "Because I can."

The biggest reason for me going caving for years was that it about my
only chance of going somewhere that nobody else had ever been. Never
mind the scare yourself shitless bit about diving in zero visibility,
the biggest hit was popping your head out of the water at the end of a
sump and seeing a silt bank with no footprints on it.

  15. Sir you have larger balls than I've got and probably more of them too.

That *would* scare me sh*t less.

I didn't do it long, just enough to bag a couple of bits of cave
nobody had been in before and then I stopped the diving and spent more
    time chemical caving.
Not as much as chemical caving would. That really is dodgy because you
don't know exactly what you've done the first time you go back in
    there.
