I've had coils just die and do nothing or make a limp attempt but I've
also had the misfiring then clearing (but that was on a banger - another
    coil fixed it).

The wizened old mechanic I discussed it with felt that in his experience
it was likely to be HT related and suggested the coils breaking down.
I'll check the winding resistances but that's unlikely to prove anything.

Main plan will be to set the ignition and, as you suggested, to check the
wiring which is a bit 'birds nesty', bodged and tired looking; get
everything to as good a base state as possible. Won't do any harm for
    the future anyway.

The other suspicion is over fuelling. Whilst on the by-pass with it at
about 110 the misfire will creep up the rev range (bear in mind this
isn't a total ignition failure; it feels like a cylinder momentarily
dropping out then coming back in, at worse two cylinders) backing the
throttle off a touch will see a temporary improvement.

Before I wreak bloody havoc on the FI I'll go through the ignition
circuit to prove that good. That's today and tomorrow set aside then...

I'd still be interested in other people's opinions.

The BlingMobile does something similar occasionally. In that case it's
due to crap in the tank blocking the fuel tap.

I'd pop the line off and ensure it's flowing well, and check the fuel
filter (assuming it has one) before you go too deeply into the fuel
    system.

Given the height the fuel from the return line attained when I stupidly
turned the ignition on with the tank off I'd say that shouldn't be a
    problem.

I can also see the fuel moving through the filter but I'll replace it as
it looks elderly and I don't know its history.

The local motor factors have a variety of shapes and sizes including
something a similar size and with in/outlets like the ones on it. I
can't see the fuel throughput (is there such a word?) being too much for
    one.

  13. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Check and clean all low tension connectors to ignitor/coils/triggers.

See how bloo yer spark is... over a 5 - 6mm gap, it should be a healthy
bloo with maybe just a tinge of orange. If it's orangey looking, yer HT
isn't very good. Possible coil fault.

I appear to have sorted it. Well, I think I have...

I was checking the timing and couldn't get the strobe to pick up properly
on number 4 - intermittent, not a 'clean' series of flashes.

Originally I thought it was the induction clamp playing up but it worked
fine on the other 3 HT leads and when I revved it the slight missing
coincided with the lack of strobe.

Aha! Out with the stock of new silicone HT lead; unfortunately the O/D
is too large for the coil but a manky bit of blue copper cored HT lead I
had lying around fitted after I'd shorn it of the car ends.

Took the turbo for a run - different bike - absolutely stomping. Still a
bit fluffy and hesitant off a shut throttle at low speeds (sub 60mph).

There was one episode of sputtery midrange misfire but it quickly cleared
and I couldn't replicate it over the next 10 miles.

Tomorrow I'll get some new HT lead and caps to replace the existing ones.

Hopefully that'll be the matter sorted but something tells me it's all
    too simple.

Other things of note: The fuel filter element is a nice black colour so
that needs a replacement and I found two screws nestling behind the
engine block. Where the **** have they come from? I've not undone them.

The coils on my Tiger are going, it seems. Not too bad yet but on my way
down to France last year, when it was pissing down all the way I seemed to
be getting mild electric shocks in my right hand, increasing in strength
and frequency when I wound it on in fear of missing the ferry.

They're 3mm screws, there are four of them - very nearly only three
    earlier today.
