    I haven't lost my mind, it's
backed up to a floppy disc
    that's around here somewhere.

What of it? Almost all bands these days are derivative in some
way or another. Not much they can do about it and still make the
    music they want to IMHO.

Franz Ferdinand sound just like the Monochrome Set, from years ago.
Oddly though, I liked the Monochrome set, I don't like FF.

The Editors (who I quite rate) sound like a weird mixture of 80s/early 90s
indie bands all fronted by and Ian Curtis type voice.

White Stripes often sound just like The Gun Club (for ages they
sounded really familiar but I couldn't quite put my finger
on it, until when playing some of my old LPs one day, I dug
out my old Gun Club albums). When I started investigating I
found they've even covered a Gun Club track.

I'm quietly confident that the list is fairly endless, any more anyone?
I can't see why it should detract from the experience of listening to
a band if their influences are showing through.

They sound like Interpol (and I mean *exactly* like Interpol), who in
turn sound like Echo and the Bunnymen fronted by Ian Curtis.

Nothing - I was trying to point out to Darren that he may be
thinking of the wrong band. Whatever.
I am, as I type, listening to the new FF album for the first time.
I'm quite enjoying it but it'll need a few more airings.
Nope - you've lost me now as I don't know The Editors or Gun Club. Or
much by White Stripes[1] come to that.
    I agree, totally.

[1] I typed that as Shite Stripes originally.

    Never knowingly heard them.
Maybe a bit, but their (KC) singer can actually sing, so not that
    much.
