OK. I'm sure BT is right.

What would I know, I've only had and riden the Z50 for >15 years....

Only problem I know of is the turn signals.....when you first fire it up
you need to rev it pretty hard for the blinkers to work. Once everything
is warmed up, it all seems to work according to plan.

Drop in to any hangar or control tower or such and ask
for opinions. You'll find that insofar as the aviation
business is concerned, he's a dead cert for "World's
    Most Hated".

Fuckin' old prick lost the civil aviation job *years*
ago, but he still can't keep his nose out or his mouth
shut. Old prick slings a few bob in the general direction
of the Salvation Army and and makes a few biscuits out
of local raw materials, and he's got Australia's Mums
and Dads eating out of his hand! Old prick would have
those same mums and dads dead as doornails in aeroplane
accidents if he got his way re aviation 'reform'.

Nope, there's nothing wrong with Dick Smith that one
    well placed bullet couldn't right.

    </rant>

G, pro aviation and therefore anti Dick.

Mate of mine's old man had one of those when I was a
little tacker. We used to ride it around the back paddock
like mad bastards when his old man wasn't home. That
one was more advanced but, it had a full fairing!

Watched an episode of Ted Bulpit the other night. He said Wogs are good for
this country. Somebody has to buy all the Valiants.

Easy now Cam, please don't hurt me![1]

That's just what I've read in the service manual, and in various tales
from people who've owned them. Also, Dad's bike was always
difficult/impossible[2] to start without a battery, so maybe the Z50
uses a different setup to the CT90?

[1] Gotta be careful around blokes named "Manson"!
[2] ie. You couldn't do it from the kickstart.

Looks like you've got a bit of work ahead of you too! Let me know if
you want to borrow my service manual.

[some reason you've started trimming so heavily BT?]

It might work with just a big capacitor in place of the battery.
'big' as in very big, 0.1F or so. Worked for the CB250RS.

And pegs! (non-folding, on the swingarm of course)
I would like to borrow your service manual please.

I bodgied up a charger, then bodgied up the battery. It had 1V in it when I
started on Saturday, about 4.5V this morning. I think it's cactus.

And it won't start; no sparkies, in the plug or the points (let alone the
dash lights, although they could be blown too). A complete deficit in the
electrons department. The carby is a bit dodgy too, allowing fuel back into
    the intake plenum.

It looks rough, but not quite so bad under the layers of dust and webs and
wasps' nests. Speedo cable is missing half its inner, so the 8700km
indicated is clearly erroneous, but it seems fairly low km. Dry as a sheet
of roadkill, with a multitude of small dings and scratches, and the muffler
is rotted out, but I think it's basically sound.

No worries, if you can get to Woden during work hours I'll bring the
service manual in tomorrow (to be collected at your convenience).
Otherwise I assume you'll be up for a trip to Tarago on
    Friday/Saturday?

If it has a dud regulator then I have a "Bitser" CT90 that still has
one, in unknown condition. It might also have a functional stator, if
that turns out to be your problem.

A new battery should only cost $20 or so. Go on, you know you want
    to... ;-)

    strangely this morning.
