I haven't actually measured them myself, I must admit. I'm only using
    the manufacturers data I find.

Of course there'll be variations between brands, especially where levels
    of quality are concerned.

I list the goods by price, low to high, skip past the "rock bottom
price" stuff and choose the cheapest one in the "looks as if it'll last
a reasonable amount of time" for thinks like kettles, microwaves, etc.

Stuff that is more of a hobby, TV, audio, computers, cost isn't a
    consideration.

There were a few "Pound" shops oop 'ere not so long ago, but everyone of
them went tits up. It's a bloody shame too, coz 8 rechargeable AA batteries
and 4 AAA's for a quid isn't bad. The sold some great stuff for cleaning
bikes too which in most other shops costs around 4 quid.

The only thing I've bought from Woolies for **** knows how long was a 12v
rattler (impact driver), but the fucker never worked, so I've never bought
    owt else.

It's still sad to see 'em go though, coz they were great places to go when I
was a kid and Christmas was a-coming.

It's a convenient way to heat the most oft used room in the house.

Reading has a rather cut-throat market in pound shops, to the extent
that it has a 99p shop. Maidenhead, otoh, is a bit classier, with a shop
    called "A £ound or Two"

Reading has 3 such emporia - 2 x Poundland (one much better than the
other) and the aforesaid 99p shop. We are taking our kids club to the
better Poundland on a trip to town to see the lights and do their
Christmas shopping and usually buy all their Christmas presents there.
It's great for kids; they love it.

Same place they nick their fags from. The corner shop where they KNOW
there's "stuff" in the back and by asking for it, the shopkeeper has to
leave them alone n the main shop for a few seconds.

I wonder if kids still use that old trick?

It's very unusual in army basic training. Most people carry some fat on
them to lose - I had none but ate like a horse because there was food I
could actually stomach available when I neeed it.

Pound shops can be great for little bits of computery type stuff.

I've bought numerous USB cables from them over the years and even found
one selling iPod USB cables - which are something stupid like 15 quid
    from Apple.

I've just been on Amazon, and bought a 10M Ethernet cable for 1p (OK, it
    was £3.85 postage).
