They were killed by Ikea and the B&Q's I read recently.

Does this mean no wolves in Scotland then )

heh. That guy (Paul Lister) is the son of the founder of MFI. I
imagine they took their money out years and years ago.

Hmm, that sounds a bit of fluff to me. We all have cars, they are about
8 million more cars than there are registered drivers, and we still
change quite usable cars for new ones.

I think the days of buying new technology, just to be able to say you've
got it, are pretty much over though.

I'd like a new LCD telly, but I've yet to find one with a better picture
than my old Panasonic Quintrix CRT telly - and that is as economical to
run (LCD TVs use about twice the leccy of a CRT).

You'll be waiting a long bloody time then. Digital TVs do have much
better contrast and much higher resolution (obviously) but it'll be
years before they get the same quality picture as CRT.

In fact, I think our perspective on what a decent picture looks like
will change to conform to the 'superior' digital image long before
digital images come remotely close to the aesthetic quality of analogue.
    Is that still true, though?

Really? My LCD draws about 200W - is a CRT really only 100W?

Possibly, although I think it'll be those that choose HD that might not
    notice the difference so much.

For the money, I'd probably consider a projector set up instead, except
for the 300W+ consumption that is.
Ooh yes, the ones I've been looking at, quite recently, were rated at
180W, my old CRT is a max of 85W.

The worst is that the LCD use full power consumption all the time, as
they illuminate the screen continuously. CRTs consumption is variable,
as the power to illuminate the screen is goverened by the image being
    viewed.

  11. Corporal Carrott was musing that the poor man buys a pair of boots for a
fiver and they last a year - not repairable, just totally fucked.
The rich man spends 20 quid on boots and they not only last three or
four times a long, but they are repairable time after time.
In the long run the poor man is much better off spending the 20 quid.

    I'm impressed.

Ah, it seems that CRT and LCD are comparable, for a certain size, but
as people usually buy bigger LCDs, they use more power than the CRT
    they replace.

  13. Years ago (and I don't know if it's still the case) MFI were a prison
employer, ie, they had old lags doing the manfacturing work for all
    those thousands of fallapart kitchens.
Certainly one way of keeping labour costs down.

Hmm, maybe. I was looking at 32" LCDs I must admit, as there aren't any
28" LCDs about that I can find. The 26" one I just found was 95W. Moving
up to 32" jumps to 180W.

Shouldn't this be where somebody slags off the Woolies employees and
says it's their own fault for being lazy, inefficient cunts?

It happened when Rover went tits so I can't understand the lack of
    enthusiasm this time.

I was remarking to a taxi driver only yesterday that my abiding memory
of my local Woolies was chucking a major paddy at the age of about four
because there was a plastic astronaut set that my mum wouldn't[1] buy
    for me.

    Christ, I was a horrible child[2]. I wonder if that's why I can't abide
    kids now?

    [1] Actually, make that 'couldn't',
[2] Yes, yes, let's just take that as read, shall we?
