Nothing official but Robert Peston says they are. So, if they weren't, they are now
If I knew who he was, I might. As it is, I saw the thread title, and thought we were in for another soft porn youtube video .. In my local High St there's a Wilkinson's & an Argos which seem to do a better job of being Woolworths IYSWIM.
Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Nige I think he's doing a great job of covering and explaining what's going on. His delivery, however, is so mannered that I have to read his stuff. I can't listen to it.
Actually, the trend changed some while ago. For most of this year the sales of better quality goods has gone up, it's the cheap shitty stuff that's been suffering. It looks like people have started to realise that it is more economical to buy better products in the first place.
I haven't bought anything from there since I was a kid. So it's all my fault. -- Malc R1100RS old and tatty You laugh at me because I am different I laugh at you because you are all the same
Yes. I was watching an interview with a 'boss' of Morrison's, and he reckoned all their quality items were selling really well. They had actually changed their stock to better quality, and found sales had increased, and are just about the only store with growth at this time. Look at Apple too, whatever you think of them, they do make pretty good quality stuff. They posted their best ever quarter profits a couple of weeks ago, yet they aren't cheap by any means. The world's two most profitable car manufacturers are Honda and Toyota. I believe someone in this very group said 'buy cheap, buy twice'. It's certainly something I find to be true with most things I've bought. I think people really are getting pissed off with shite products, and are now prepared to pay for better quality. It's a lesson learnt years ago, that seems to have been forgotten in the last couple of decades.
Certainly true of tools. Why buy something shitty when for a couple of quid more you can have a lifetime warranty (Not necessarily Snap-On) I hate the way everywhere is flooded with cheap shit ATM. (e.g. throwaway toasters for a fiver) How can they make things so cheap in China/Taiwan, get type approval, then send them halfway around the world and flog for a fiver. It doesn't add up. Well it does, but only when European manufacturing has gone down the pan. P.
I've just come into the TV room and there's a prog on Sky 3 (Road Wars) and the narrator needs a severe fucking with a rag-man's trumpet. He's got THE most annoying (and put on) accent it's ever been my dispeasure to hear. He's trying his hardest to be a "street wise norvener" and everyone know, such a thing doesn't exist. He drops EVERY "t" and even the fucking scrotes don't do that in real life. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
It's generally very true. My version is 'buy cheap, you buy dear'. It's Carrott's boots all over again.
Absolutely. There's buying cheap, and there's buying sensible. You don't always have to go to the top to get the best value. I have some Sykes Pickavant tools too, which also have a lifetime warranty. And as far as UK manufacturing goes - *what* Uk manufacturing?
