If you missed it Friday then watch/record Have I Got News For You? on
    Saturday.

Merton goes off on one about this topic. John Humphrys, presenter this
week, has a fit of the giggles. So did I.

*how* I yearn for an intra-fictometer transportation device so I could
    lamp Kenton.

Kenton? Jean-Paul was always the one I'd love to have lamped. And I'd
*really* like to burn Ambridge Hall down. Fucking incomers.

    Question:

Just what is the difference between listening to the Archers, and
    watching Eastenders/Corrie/Brookie?

Apart from the fact that common folk watch telly, and intellectuals
listen to the radio, of course.

The Archers is (mostly) well written, and (almost always) well-acted.

    Oh, good.

It's an artistic merit thing, then, rather than a general "doesn't
    appeal to pikeys" type thing.

err, one's listening and one's watching. You can be doing other things
at the same time as listening to the radio.
I think you've got the argument inside out. Eastenders et al. is
/supposed/ to appeal to the lowest common denominator Sun-reading
    prole.

    Is there a difference?

I mean, what do pikeys know about art?

They are far too poor to appreciate it for a start.

Oh, I know that, I just didn't know whether The Archers was designed
as highbrow, or just perceived as such. I mean, it's still just a
    soap, innit?

Yes, its still a soap. No, I don't think it's designed to be highbrow.

  19. While listening to the radio in my workshop/garage, I've just made Jane
a gadget to put her garden string on with a cutting blade built in.

    (I must get out more)

it is, but I think the main difference between it and the TV soaps are
that it is done fairly tastefully.
