....heh, years ago a mate of mine was going Dorchester to Martinstown
along a straightish backroad and had one land on him, the police found
him whimpering and sitting in the middle of the road surrounded by
squashed bike - it was only when they found red hair stuck to the
remains of his screen that they sussed out what had happened.... all
he remembered was one minute hairing along the empty road, then
    everything suddenly going dark

I wonder how many other people know for certain that an Elk isn't the same
thing as a Gnu or even a Moose?

Either way, I wouldn't want any of them flying through *my* fucking
    windscreen.

    Not quite that simple.

North American Moose = Scandinavian Elk.
North American Elk != Scandinavian Elk (closer to a Scandi Reindeer)

Gnus live a LOOOOOOOONG way away and are completely and utterly
    different...

what i meant of course is that when we[1] say "elk" that is the same as what
    the yanks/canucks call "moose"

i couldn't give a **** what the yanks mean when they say "elk" because this
isn't a yank newsgroup and anyway they have the wrong meaning for lots of
words, like "pissed" and "mad" and "fanny" and "pants".

[1] by "we" i mean europeans, including brits, not just scandinavians

I once caught a racehorse that had thrown its rider and, when I first
saw it, was cantering merrily up the A1303. After a moment of
indecision I turned round and went after it: it had suddenly occurred
to me that there was a slip road to the A14 dual-carriageway just a
quarter of a mile or so in the direction the horse was headed.

I did keep my helmet on in case it reared and I got a pair of size ten
irons in the face, but I was also concerned that the horse would be
spooked by the helmet. As it happened, the horse slowed to a walk as I
approached it and meekly let me catch it and lead it off the road.

  12. It's elk hunting season here in a couple of weeks. I've a mate taking
a week off work. I hope he bags one - elk is one of my favourite
    meats.

Perthshire Council send a lorry out around 5am every morning to check
the A9 and other major roads for deer roadkill.
A big problem if you hit one in the car, as they weigh a lot.

Intersting conclusions they draw, and they freely admit that they're
just rough approximations. Personally, I think this bit:

is particularly bizarre. I mean, I know that some deer, notably
muntjacks, are only dog-sized, but even so I find it hard to imagine,
having seen a couple of deer RTAs, that 9/10 of them are not serious
    enough to be reported.

And we mustn't forget that these people need to produce statistics that
support both ides of an "argument" so they can do it all again next year,
    thusly keeping in full employment.
