You'd get on well with my lad Lozzo. He fucking hates the things, but then
again, maybe you wouldn't, coz he DETESTS E-Types even more. Probably comes
from serving his time in the trade at a place that restored them, thus
spending a lot of time putting things right that wouldn't have needed
putting right if they'd been designed and built properly in the first place.

    Kids eh?

E-Types are fucking awful to work on, with hundreds of built in rust-
traps all over the underbody and inner wings. They had virtually no rust
protection from the factory either, something they're still having
problems getting right, if recent examples of their newer ranges that
I've seen are anything to go by.

Not many folk even know what it is! It is a superb bit of kit, i chuck
the Motocross bike on the bike rack & you have somewhere nice & warm to
get changed or even have a kip in!! It's got a ebersphacher petrol
heater so it can be 25-30 degrees all the time!

Yebbut, does it do more than five to the gallon?

I was sorely tempted by a "normal" LR ambulance (to convert into a
camper) until I found out just *how* much fuel they guzzle.

They were the dogs bollocks when you were 16 and even "not bad" when you
were 17, but you could pass your test at 17 and ride anything. That anything
usually being a Spitfire or a Bonnie or a Tiger 90 if you had no cash.

Don't me and the boy-chic know that. We've restored a few and behind the
shit shields in front of the back wheel is always a fucking nightmare. We
took to sealing them to death (life), priming as well as the outside,
painting ONLY with 2pk, then stonechipping the bejesus out of them before
making sure the shit shields made them totally waterproof.

    They had virtually no rust
    Yep, particularly the underside.

The best investment we made at that time was a "spit-roaster" so we could
work on the underside while we either stood up or sat down. It also allowed
sealer (and anything else we put on) to run into places where gravity would
usually stop it going, but they were (and still are, as you say) rust
buckets in the making. Thankfully, 2pk paints are a bit better at defeating
the ravages of the British weather than celly.

That's not bad - IIRC that the regular ambulances are rated at
something less than ten or so...

heh, we've had a few "classics" come in for estimales/quotes over the
last few years, like yer do... '60's MG's, they pull up and a minute
after they've stopped you can still hear the water slopping around...
And people wonder why there aren't many "classic '60's & '70's cars
around... If anyone wants a "classic", get a fully restored one thats
been properly done, as they should have been before they left the
    factory...

I remember well my first ride on a Honda. Owned by my cousin and IIRC it was
around '64 - '65. I wasn't overly impressed when I jabbed the gear lever to
change down for an overtake only to find the back wheel slide out. I never
rode it again after that, but it was the ONLY Honda I saw at that time.
Plenty of Tiger Cubs and Aerial Leaders/Arrows, but nothing from Japan.

And don't enter into a resto of something like the MGB unles you're a
masochist or very well heeled. Trouble is, most people who buy MGB's for
peanuts seem to think they can be restored for peanuts too and I have to say
I enjoy the look on their faces when they get a quote.

  18. The only way I'd consider doing it is with a BMH shell and start from
    scratch.

And you'd still end up with an MGB, so it's probably not worth starting.
